4th outing with this rig, and I am convinced about this setup. Rod is a Kuying Conqueror 6'8" ml, reel Curado 70, line Power Pro 15lb Super Slick, and the lure a 3/16oz underspin with 3.5" Cabelas Swimbait.  The first outing I had an 1/8oz ball head jig with a 2.5" swimbait, and it casted it well. I have about 30 fish caught on this rig so far, and I have had zero issues with the light line. I had it laying around, and threw it on to cast light stuff, and I am sold on it now. The whole set up is just at 10oz total with line.

Hook sets are fun with this setup, and I have hooked up with some 3lbers at the top end. Anyone who wants a super light rig this is it.

No binding/digging in with the line, even when pulling to get snags loose.

The key to using  light braid on a casting reel is to wind the line on tight when spooling … I may flirt with trying standard #20 lb. PP one day but that would be about as light as I would want to try . Most folks go with #30 lb. braid as the lightest weight braid to avoid line digging in issues .

The key to using light braid on a baitcast reel is that most reported problems about braid on baitcast reels are either myths or user error.

I use 20 lb PP on my treble hook rods......I've never had a problem with it. I also wouldn't go lighter.

 

Except on a musky rod, all my bait casters have 20lb braid on them. I’ve never understood the “light line digging in” problem that so many others seem to have. I’ve never had that problem. I know what happens if I don’t get a backlash out all the way and make a cast, but that can happen with the 65lb braid on my musky rod. For those that have had dig in problems in the past, what happened that pulled the line so hard that it dug in?

I use 20# Power Pro on my President - never an issue beyond the same ones I have with 50# on my Fuego CT-XS...occasional backlashes - but that's user error.

The only reason I advise people to go 30lb minimum is because it's easier to manage for most people. Also theirs a lot of reels out there that don't handle anything less than 30lb or the equivalent mono/flouoro that well.

 

My Curado 50 & 70 handle light line (15-20lb braid) much better than my 200 sized reels.

I use 30lb braid on almost all my casting reels except for my frog setup. It’s been my favorite do all size, just changing the leader strength out per application. I agree with CrankFate tho, a lot of worry I had was because everyone seems to say it’s always a problem going below 30lb braid, that is until it tried 15lb. I think I will stick with 30lb on everything else, except for this specialty setup for right now. It’s so much fun to use though, I shall see.

I didn’t realize so many people used 20lb braid in the regular.

I have 10# pps8s on Daiwa sv105 and Shimano 50mg7. I use these for 1\20-1\16 ned rigs and pond magic spinnerbaits small paddle tails and up to senkos.

I love it. I have never used BFS gear, and I don’t believe this is light like true BFS rods.

i basically wanted a ML rod to throw light baits instead of my spinning setups, and this is fantastic for that application. I wouldn’t want to throw anything lighter than an 1/8oz ball head jig with it. It’s very well made, has micro guides, but my FG knot flies through the guides with no issues. The handle is perfect, and I love the taper. It’s a fast rod, but definitely not extra fast. It’s awesome setting the hook with this nice light casting setup.

It can handle light jigs great too. I had a 1/4 + trailer bitsy bug on it , and it handled it great. Unfortunately I didn’t get any fish with it, the fish only want moving baits lately.

The Curado 70 level wind must be a high speed design that over laps the line or you are very good at line management keeping it tight on the spool.

I see you added a Fuji hook hanger to the rod.

I actually weighed it, the underspin and bait came in at just 10g. The Kuying rod came with two Fuji hangers as a bonus.

The underspin is 5.5g w/o the swimbait. I did load the line on properly, but I didn't  really treat it any differently while fishing it though.

Surprised the underspin was 3/16 including blades, usually don't include hardware.

10 grams is close to 3/8 oz and should cast good using a bait casting reel.

Impressive line management with the Shimano Curado 70.

The Fuji hook hanger are bulky but functional.

Good performing combo, enjoy it.

I use 20lb braid on a few different casting combos and never had any issues. It cast a mile and I mainly use it for treble hooked topwaters which allows me to just reel into fish for the hook set.
