M/MF or MH/MF for Squarebills?

Featured Replies

I fish a lot of open water and rocks with squarebills and not much in grass. Im making a rod purchase and idk if I should go with the M/MF or MH/MF. I feel like the medium power would be super flimsy but the medium heavy would be too stiff for what im using it for and I think there are many other baits to substitute for a squarebill in grass. Thats just what i think. And should I go graphite or glass? Thank you for the feedback.

Btw generally throwing 1.5's up to 3.0's most the time.

MH/MF. Squarebills are built to crank around cover, you need a rod that can move a big fish away from that cover when they bite.

I like medium but I crank squarebills with a moderate fast glass rod and glass is a little heavier than a regular graphite.
Even before I started using glass I used a medium fast graphite for squarebills it depends on the blank, some are more stiff and a Medium can feel like a MH some are more moderate and feel like a Medium even though they are a MH you really need to just get your hands on a couple of different brands and see what rod is going to feel better for you. I’m not brand specific but if you ask us what brand is the best, your going to get one million different opinions.
Best recommendation is to get your hands on a couple of rods see what feels best for you.

+1, you need to try what works for you rather then trying to guess based on our responses. Everyone has different action preferences

I love throwing 1.5s on med/mod with 10lb line over weedtops and around weed edges. It is definitely super flimsy but it keeps them pinned.

IMO the key is to use a moderate action.  Then, on small square bills use a medium weight and heavier ones MH.  Think about it. I use #10lb fluro on my squarebills, you want a rod that is a little forgiving when you set the hook.
