Towing Tin Rigs

Featured Replies

A question for all of you tin guys. I'm looking to eventually upgrade beyond my starter boat, which is amazing, but I will move beyond it here so as I transition to the front of the boat for tournaments.

I currently have a 17 ft Aluminum All-weld Rhino hull made by James River Jets. I can tow this wonderfully with my V6 Honda Pilot.

But I'm looking to move to a 19 ft Xpress, Cresliner, or Vexus in the next 2-3 years. My car is rated for towing up to 6,000 pounds. If I'm not towing fiberglass and just stick with tin rigs, would I be able to get away with this, or do I need to buy a truck before I can get a new boat?

The big deal is not towing it is stopping.  My wife pulled my Champion 206 to South Texas several times with a Ford Winstar mini van.  There was no problem.  However, the trailer had brakes.

If your Honda has a towing package that has a transmission cooler, I don’t think you’d have any problems.

Thats a pretty decent sized SUV. As long as you pay attention to your overall tow weight i would think you'll be fine. Going to go through some brakes though, so make sure youre replacing pads regularly or that will get expensive.

And just because the maximum towing capacity is 6000 pounds, doesn't mean you should be towing that all the time either.  I personally would keep it under 5000 pounds if the max was 6000.  Distance, terrain, and speed also play a role in the wear and tear on your vehicle when towing.

defensive driving, trailer brakes, upgraded/maintained car brake pads, and caution, you'll be good to go. put the car in 4wd at the ramp

My dad tows an 18ft Lund with the same SUV no problem. Like others said you should just make sure it has a towing package with a transmission cooler, and trailer brakes will be a big help.

I hope yours is 4WD. Slick ramps without 4WD can be a real problem.

read your owners manual.  the towing capacity without trailer brakes is probably only 1500lbs.
