BPT Season Over?

Featured Replies

I haven't followed BPT as closely as the Elite series this year and I just went on their website to check out the results of the Sturgeon Bay tournament.  The first article was about Jordan Lee winning the points championship for 2020.  There aren't any other events scheduled for 2020 and no mention of an attempt to reschedule cancelled events.

This surprised me, especially when contrasted to the hoops B.A.S.S. has jumped through to try to make the Elite season a full year.  I spoke with Trip Weldon at Eufaula last month & he said it was like trying to schedule 2 years worth of tournaments into 1 year, difficult but doable.  I would have thought the process for BPT would have been easier being they don't have to contend with weigh-ins & crowds.

My question is how much does the angler-owned aspect of BPT have to do with them giving up on the rest of 2020?  I would have thought many anglers just wanted to get out to fish, but maybe I am wrong.  Are the BPT anglers creating a ro*** for scheduling events for the rest of the year?

With it becoming obvious that none of the big 4 sports will be doing much for the rest of 2020, sports networks like ESPN are starving for content.  B.A.S.S. has taken advantage of that, first with Eufaula back in June and with the 2 upcoming New York events, all broadcast live on ESPN2.  I think BPT is missing a huge opportunity for their organization & their sponsors by not finishing out the year.  Ironically, I would suggest that for live TV, BPT's format would draw a larger audience, more people who don't know much about fishing, but understand basic scoring in competitions.

Administrative question -

Since when is "road block" a banned word?  The censor allowed the "ro" and then blocked "***" when it was used as a single word

I think I know what it is - take the word as a single, remove the RO and what do you have...something ABP does.

With baseball, basketball and hockey all starting soon this is not a great time for tournaments if you want viewers.  I think BPT anglers still have cups upcoming if they qualified for them.  My local radio station in Minnesota has a fishing show on 3 times a week. Listening to it it seems that almost all tournaments are now catch, weigh, release.  I think COVID has changed the way things are done and I think all tours will change somewhat in the future.  I have not watched a BASS event yet this year but am looking forward to the ones coming up.

I'm having doubts that those sports are going to finish the season or that the NFL is even going to start.  There have been so many hurdles (road blocks?) for these organizations to jump through and they don't have the commitment from all of the athletes to continue, I see it easily turning into a mess.

I wouldn't be surprised to see those organizations start back up only to have players or teams back out of the competition once some positive tests start turning up.  I believe that would hurt viewership for say, the opponent of the Lakers in the 2nd round of the playoffs back out because of player concerns or tests, so the Lakers get a bye that round.  There will be some inequities that pop up, and since it is different than what folks have been used to (& waiting for), I think they will just turn it off.

I don't know about anyone else, but for me, it feels like the NBA & NHL have already finished the year.

Sounds from the old home-stead. Graduated BHS in 78, attended BSU 78-80 before going into the Air Force.

I think it was a money thing.

They are talking that there will be entry fees next year too.

But they will change the cup format so everyone earns some money back, Call it the participation trophy league lol

But they will let all BPTers fish the FLW procircuit events.

Not sure what that will do for points or for the FLW guys trying to qualify for the BPT.

my understanding of the way bpt/mlf works is based on tv contracts.  they have to be finished by a certain time of year in order to edit content for a certain air date.

Are they giving rebates for not living up to their end of the contract?

If they were contracted to air 8 events on Discovery channel and now only have 4 events, surely they dont get the full contract money?

i would imagine after this year there will be a lot of new stipulations in tv sports contracts
