Retiring a rod

Featured Replies

After thousands of fish, the last thing my dad gave me, a Fenwick Venture 702 spinning rod finally broke after high sticking a bite (didn't end up catching the fish).

This rod has infinite sentimental value and I am looking for ideas on how to make a display out of it. I was thinking of gluing it back together and making a wood backing for it and then hanging it up in my office or garage. Anyone done something similar or have other ideas/pictures of ways they have a retired a rod?

Sad day indeed.

I think you're on the right track with the plaque. Good Idea.  Inserting a small rod/dowel into both ends of the break may assist to facilitate the repair for display.

Selecting a photo or two to add to the 'mount' might be a nice touch.  I have the stick my Dad fished when I was a boy as well; circa 1968.  Your post has inspired me to do something along these lines accordingly this project will be added  to this winter's To Do List.

Thanks Doc.

A-Jay is right, the best way to fix it for display is to fit a spigot (rod, dowel, etc that goes inside the tubular blank at the break) to the rod, use epoxy adhesive to hold it.  If the rod has splintering you probably can glue at least most of them back into position so they won't be visible exc up close.  This would not be the right way to fix it if you were to want to keep fishing it.  That would involve an external sleeve, which would change the appearance.

This looks pretty good.

I made wall hangers out of a couple river smallie rods I use to fish the heck out of. Wore them out. Could not part with them. Sentimental? Probably. A lot of good times with them. The BPS Billy Westmoreland still has life in it but decided to retire it.

Many ways to get creative I guess. I really didn’t do anything special like that posted pic. Mine are mounted just under the ceiling on the wall with reels attached and lures on the line. Looks cool.

Have fun with your project. It will look good.

My barber has a nice wooden plaque with his dad's old casting rod hanging in the shop. The plaque is about 2ft wide, and the reel is attached to this. The line goes to an old 7lb bass his dad caught years ago. He's gotten a lot of compliments on it over the years.

If the handle section is intact, they make really cool lamps. My grandpa made one out of an old Fenwick rod of his, with a Mitchell reel. It looks really neat in his man cave.

I've always toyed with the idea of using the reel and line to turn the lamp on.  Those pull switches -- pull on, pull off.

I had a blue fenwick venture that I got back in 2004 that broke back in the springtime.  It broke as I was ripping a fluke through the grass.   It was a pond trip so I took old rods in case one of the kids stepped on one.  I've caught many of bass on that rod.  I even got tangled in a tree once and and the lure was barely dangling over the water and fish jumped up and took it, I was able to pull down on the limb and get him in the boat.  Good rod for sure.  It came with an Abu cardinal reel.  The rod outlasted the reel. The last reel on it was a sahara
