Casting reel uneven spooling

Featured Replies

Hey guys so I have a johnny morris carbon Black casting reel and I was spooling it up and noticed the line favors one side Heavily. Any ideas what might cause this issue? It spools more on the left side near the breaks

Try tying off the line to something that won’t move. Then press the button and walk off the spool.
When you come to the end of the spool start winding the line back up and walk back towards the end. Make sure you hold the reel level as you wind the line back up.
If the line keeps piling on one side the pawl in the reel may need to be replaced.

Thanks I'll give that a shot and I guess go from there. It will give me a good excuse to get a new reel if worse comes to worse

My phluegar supreme did this to me just recently and I remembered that it did it to me after I broke it totally down this winter. I  oil/greased ( what ever way you do it) the level wind worm gear up front.  After oiling it up the problem was taken care of.

How ya spooling it?

Make sure you start with the line guide dead center, if you see the line starting to load up more to one side simply apply pressure with your finger in the opposite direction. It may still load a little to one side but a couple long cast will correct this.

That could honestly be my issue. It's weird it just really started recently doing it and my curado k never had the issue.

I notice that about half the time when respooling a reel it tends to load up on one side of the spool more, not a huge amount but noticeable.  I then noticed that after that first day of fishing the line is pretty evenly spooled.

The level wind is the only issue I've ever had with a BPS reel.  I have several old PQ's and a JM signature.  The level winds will get dirty or just start being balky after awhile.  Clean and give em a little oil and they'll come out of it

Thanks I will try that if it doesn't pan out

I just got one. Wasn’t overjoyed spooling YZH on a spinning reel, but man oh man it was superb on my baitcasters!

I wouldn’t say “tight”, but it was under tension.

Keep your line guide dead center, I always put a strip of either masking or painters tape over my knot, slight tension on the line with your fingers, and reel slowly.  If your feeling burn or heat on your thumb and index finger that’s telling you your spooling too fast (which could contribute to uneven line lay) and your holding too much tension. Slow and steady reeling will give you even line lay.

I had this with my Curado K. Found out it was me favoring one side slightly when I was spooling the reel. Same if I retrieve from extreme angles. It just took a little adjustment on my part.

So I actually ran the line thru a beater rod and into the spool and with my 5 second spooling station ( 2 pieces of wood at a 90 angle with some bolt and some washers) manages to get it to lay nicely. I took it slow under a steady pressure and it evened out a lot better this time

Even when i use this, i also use my finger while reeling and guide the line eveningly side to side.

Exactly! ?

I make sure the middle  of the spool is inline with line guide, both tension spring are as tight as possible, & I do not adjust anything on my reel.

Hey anyone know if you can buy more durable tension springs for this? It’s by far the best spooling station I’ve personally used but those plastic “springs” wear out and break under tension at times.
