Finesse Ribbon Tails

Featured Replies

Ribbon tails seem to be popular here is few ways:

3 or 4 inch ribbon tails on 1/16 or 1/8 oz lead head

fish just off the bottom steady retrieve

over grass or edges of weeds and pads lanes, docks parallel or vertical jigging the poles, black, black fire or chart tail

fave summer way is weightless fished over weeds or in pads on top

should be white cos the bottom of frogs and snakes are white

4 or 6 inch

whats your fave finesse method with ribbon tails

Does finesse simply mean small lure

Or is more about the method?

Finesse means different things to different folks these days. Some like lighter mono line, some braid/ leader combos. We even have light baitcast outfits to throw light line baits now. As for ribbon tail worms? Yes, I've used them. Culprit being an old favorite, t rigged, fished slowly on or near bottom.

I would suggest searching in the toolbar here on BR. Tons of info on all the topics you've posted about.

Yes. And the open toolbar box. Type in "finesse worms". You'll be busy reading for a while....

I'm in the school of thought that finesse is more about presentation than lure size. Of course there are exceptions... Meaning a 12inch swim bait will never be finesse to me...likewise a TRD no matter what you do with it will never be power fishing. But in general finesse and power are based on presentation. For example a 3/8ths jig can be power if hopped or swam aggressively...but if your straight up dragging it polishing rocks to me that's finesse. Lipless is another good example...burned is power slowly hopped or wormed on bottom is finesse. Just my opinion.

I take note from some of your recent posts that you might be a grub fishing guru.

Try using a Zoom “Fat Albert” in some of those fishing situations. They have a bit of a larger profile, active tail.

I sort of cut my teeth grub fishing when I went to artificial lure fishing only years ago. Mr. T, Kailin, Zoom and many others have the slightly longer tail types.

I find the variety so large that I’ve never gotten into those swimbaits with the boot style tail. I have some like that but always reach for a grub type.

Almost can’t fish a grub wrong. A billion colors out there to match or look like a baitfish.

Finesse: skillful handling of a situation : adroit maneuvering

Adroit: having or showing skill, cleverness, or resourcefulness in handling situations

Define it how y'all want ?

i fish 3 and 4 inch ribbon tails as search baits on flats

as a vertical bait on weeds walls and dock posts or trees

fished just of the bottom with a slow steady retrieve they seem to catch bass when most presentations fail

Another half decent worm for you to try is the Zoom Curly Tail Worm. 4” with a ribbon tail. I light t-rig and fish them.

I don’t fish a heavy jig or buzz bait and do use them as a trailer on them.

They don’t have many colors. I don’t see them around much anymore. Their popularity may have dropped off over the years. As long as I can get them in black and green pumpkin I don’t care that much.

That’s a good one, I can’t find white ones, I like white for trailers and fishing grass or pad weightless and on riprap, rattlesnake lures was a good one but I can’t find them anymore, most of the big tackle dealers don’t have any under 7 & 1/2 inches
