I’ve been asking a lot about flipping rods, so I’m getting a 7’6 heavy:fast action with 50 pound braid . Is this over kill for 1/2 oz jigs with a trailer? I already have a ton of these. If this isn’t good enough can I go up to 3/4oz or 1 oz? Thanks-Cole

If you're flipping into heavy cover...that's what I'm using - a Heavy with 50# braid...even with 3/8 oz jigs. The rod power and line are to fight the 'cabbage'...not the fish.

My gear choice when presenting a jig, regarless of bait type or size, is usually predicated on the cover I'm fishing.  The denser and deeper I am probing the cover, the heavier the rod, line and terminal tackle I am selecting; including the hook on the jig.

Jig weight can vary depeding on several factors such as water depth, clarity and temperature.  Desired fall rate and where I think the bass are in the cover/water column (high, middle or on the bottom) should factor in as well.  A 7'6" heavy action stick with 50 lb braid and a 1/2 oz jig is pretty standard stuff for most medium to perhaps heavy cover, but like I said, it depends.

No, but not all rods labeled H are really heavy. Some are more like a medium heavy when they're rated to 1 oz. A heavy wire 1/2oz jig and trailer can hit 1 oz easily. Look for H rods rated to 1 1/2oz and you'll be more versatile where cover is concerned. It's hard to have just one jig rod with so many variables such as cover and hook gauge.

Ya - Dobyns for example is 1 rank lower than what they 'name' it. For them, you want a 5-power 'Mag Heavy' or 'Medium/Heavy Flip'.

Usually the rods labeled as a flipping rod are a bit longer and a bit more of a brookstick than other heavy rods which will still cast well (Mag Heavy for Dobyns). I had a Daiwa Tatula 7'1" H/F and that thing would cast a 3/8oz jig further than my medium heavy rods.

 

The weight of the jig really only applies to the rod's ability to cast the jig (plus trailer) and how fast it will sink to the bottom. You can take a 3/8 or 1/2 arky head jig with a fairly stout hook and fish it on a MH rod with fluorocarbon in lighter cover and then put the same jig on a flipping stick with braid to throw into heavy cover.

Only been jig fishing for 6 decades and trying to understand the question strength for jigs being related to weight?

Strength is all about the hook used not the weight?
