Braid fraying

Featured Replies

Recently I caught a fish and my braid was going through the guides with force (casting rod) it got so bad by the end of the trip that I could break it with my hands and it was 15 pound power pro. I tried on my other rod and it’s the same. I also tried spider wire same problem. So is it normal or is it my reel or rod?

I meant to say the fish was pulling drag

Inspect your rod guides for cracks. Simple method is using a cotton Q Tip, cranks snag the cotton and easy to see.

Take a Q-Tip, run it around the inside of the guides. If it starts pulling fibers off, you've got a nick in that guide - and that's what's fraying the line.

I've had braid fray and/or fade after using it for a whole season.  This sounds like more than normal wear and tear of using it over a long period of time though.

I've used 20 pound Power Pro in the past and found it was extremely vulnerable to getting nicked on even small branches and aquatic vegetation. Since then I won't use anything less than 30 lb braid although my preference is 40 lb braid for most purposes.

If it was the first time using this braid I'd agree with the above.....something is going on with one or more of your guides.......

If it did it with both rods check the line guide on your reel .

It’s brand new though

If someone drop it on a hard surface the tip guide can crack.

Check it, if it’s a new rod exchange it. The reel level wind can also cause fraying problems. If the line is under .010 D it can be a problem with bait casting reels.

Make sure the line is threaded through the guide rings properly.

New rods get damaged on the shelf all the time. You've got something going on somewhere that's damaging your line. No 20lb braid is that brittle.

I had to send a new rod back to TW last year before even using it. There was some kind of nick or something on the tip guide that I found while checking the rod over after taking it out of the shipping tube.  I ran a piece of line over the nick and it damaged the line. Rod went right back in the tube and I had a replacement in my hands about a week later. I would start with checking the guides like others mentioned. Good luck
