What angle do you like your topwaters when not moving?

Featured Replies

Question to you guys. How do you like your poppers and walk the dogs to sit when you pause them?

Do you prefer them to be vertical with tail down, 45 degrees, or to be horizontal with the water?

I personally find myself liking the tail downs the most, but want to hear from others. Let’s discuss ?

I like them horizontal with the surface. I have a Sammy that sits tail down and I prefer using Sexy Dawgs that lay flat.

Horizontal for me too.

Especially poppers as the vast majority of the time the bait sits motionless.   Walkers I rarely stop, unless a bass takes a swipe at it and misses.   A pause before resuming the walk right there often gives the fish an opportunity to reacquire the bait. Still like it to sit close to flat though.

For poppers I like them to lay tail down.

I want the feathered hook underwater at each pause.

Horizontal for walking baits and pointed away from me at a 90 deg angle.

Other than buzzbaits my favorite top water bait is the Bomber Long A Minnow. It sits horizontal .

That's a cute comment, I thought you might be more complementary...

Each lure has it's own unique attributes that can influence fish attractiveness.   The Devil's Horse lure is a good example.  By adding a larger hook on the rear, you can tilt the lure's nose up and the tail end down.  This changes the action of the lure significantly, slowing the retrieve and reducing the splash made by the props. I seem to catch bigger fish with the lure modified in this way.  Poppers can be made to pop louder with the tail down.   Walking the dog is easier with a higher running lure.  Anglers who fish top water all the time have developed all kinds of tricks.   It pays to experiment.

I tried to come up with something that used a degenerate triangle, but couldn't draw a straight line to it.

Nice to see you posting again.

I was going to say 57.9 deg., but I could see why you said 62.5 and agree with that. Probably just a measuring difference between us ?

Not to go off on a tangent, but to a degree, I think you are just angling for a protracted discussion... :)

Glad to hear all these answers. I’m actually surprised since I like my poppers and walk the dogs all tail down but you guys seem to differ. Tight lines everyone!

Ain’t nothing complementary about that comment. ?

Matter of fact, I may very well be suffering from an acute case of cabin fever. That’s my angle on it, at least. ?

To the topic, I prefer horizontal but won’t complain if the bail is biased tail down.

Primarily horizontal for me, but poppers with a little booty sag arent the worst thing in the world. Depebds on whats under the water.

I also love that this threat degenerated into math dad jokes.

I like them completely vertical as I'm taking them out of the water to unhook the bass.  LOL
