Sometimes when I cast my spinning rod the braid seems to catch onto itself or not come off the spool for some reason, seems to get a little better once wet. I have read to go larger (at 20 now go 30?)

 

Also are there braid brands/types that are less likely to do this, please recommend! 

My first guess is dig-in. If the underlying braid isn't tight, as you reel in the new layers can actually 'burrow' under. Then when you cast, they get hung up.

 

I'm running 20# Sufix 832 on my MH/F Spinning rig, and 10# Sufix 832 on my ML/F - every so often, I make a cast, but use my fingers to make sure there's sufficient tension on the line to make it tight on the spool.

One of many reasons I don't use braid. It digs, it's too visible as a main line, and using a leader adds another knot and the problems that can and do come with it, including knot failure and the knot sticking in the guides. A quality fluorocarbon or copolymer has done me much better.

But since I use spinning gear mostly I have the problem of memory w fluoro

Too large of diameter and could probably use a better quality line. Try sniper, Invizx, or Tatsu. 6, 7, 8 lb. 

Hehe I have 8lb tatsu right here actually, yet to spool it on, I had 10lb sniper but memory was still issue, annoyed the hell out of me when it got bad

I find 7 lb sniper is the sweet spot for manageability and strength on spinning tackle

@ironbjorn - What has been your experience w/ 6#/8# Tatsu on spinning reels?

What braid are you using?  

 

I have found X-Plasma from Sunline to be quite excellent.  I have been using 16lb on two spinning setups since last year.

Well, I'm not the Nord-one and I don't have Tatsu on my spinners....

 

BUT

 

6# and 8# InvizX on my 1000-2000 size spinners hasn't been a problem...course I use KVD L&L which probably helps.

Another reason to use good manual bail technique. 

Feather the end of your cast with fingertips, close the bail manually, turn with the rod and take up any slack before retrieving.  

This is going to take care of wind knots, braid twist, line dig and just about all the standard braid complaints.  

You can use really fine braid on really big fish this way.  

 

Also helps to have a braid-specific shallow spool.  

Also important to load your braid under tension - I run all my lines through a phone book with a weight on top to adjust tension.  

I like really well broken in braid better than fresh stuff out of the spool, but one thing that happens, which is more noticeable with light spinning outfits is that gunk and junk from the water will collect on it and cause it to get sticky when dry, not so much an issue if one is fishing often, but if the reel sits around the first few casts can be a chore. That reminds me, gotta clean my 7w fly line.

Is KVD L&L usually used on just fluoro or also on braid?

I use it on mono and fluoro - skip it on braid though some do use it there as well. Mainly it's to reduce memory on lines that have it...which braid doesn't.

 

One 'heavy' coating when first spooling up the line - then 2-3 spritzes the night before I'm going out.

Does Daiwa or Shimano make these? Not heard of this.

Most Shimano reels come with them, especially in small sizes.  

Daiwa Luvias comes with great shallow braid spools.  

 

Both also sell aftermarket shallow braid spools for their reels to swap with the deeper spools that came on them.  

 

The 1520 spool here for 4000/5000 Shimano is PE#1.5 200 m

The S-28 denotes it fits large frame Shimano post-'18 Stella.  

With the right spool number (stroke) you can find matching spools for older Shimano - here's the catalog page with S-numbers for Shimano models and sizes.  

All reel models with the same S-number will swap spools.  

You can find Yumeya, SLP Works and OEM spools from many Japan vendors, especially Plat and Hedgehog.  

I don't have any Daiwa references, but you'll find their spools at those vendors also.

Not waste - give it 2-3 seasons depending on how often you fish - then reverse the braid. Whole new end without having to buy more.

You won't get the same result.  

Here's a mid-depth spool that gets awesome line management with 10-lb Tatsu,

but comes up a bit short with backing and finesse braid over the top.  

It will fish, but it's not this

(300 yds 35-lb braid on a surf reel) 

a lot of people are going to say, yes, it works just fine for me.  

The same people will elsewhere complain about line twist and line dig.

Gotcha thanks, one more question. I see you have a nice ball handle on this reel, did this come with? My shimano came with a small handle and I tried replacing it with the gomexus knob but have had some issues with it moving, is this an after market arm/hand/knob?

I use backing on shallow and braid ready spools.  You want the backing to be stacked as even as possible.  Generally thinner line gets better results then thicker line.  For L and ML gear I only use about 60 or 65 yards of braid.  You only use the first 25-30 yds anyway and after the outer layer gets ropey I flip it and start over.
