I have two Humminbird Helix 7's.  Both were made less than 5 years ago.   For GPS/mapping purposes, It says I need an ethernet cable "strung" between them.  Will ANY ethernet cable work and is it really as simple as that?

The cables are proprietary Humminbird cables with pin connections.

 

My ethernet on my bow Helix 7 is connected to my Ultrex so I would need the Humminbird ethernet switch to network my console Helix 10.

 

I would assume if you have unused ethernet on both it might be as simple as just connecting them via cable. Call HB and they'll tell you exactly what you need for your setup.

So, no using one of the half-dozen ethernet cables I have floating around the house I guess.  Sigh...  Should have known it would be "proprietary."  

Big question is your Helix units network compatible? Do they say G2N anywhere on them? I believe it was 3-4 years ago that the Helix 7’s were made network compatible. 

You will need a port like this one on your units.

A standard ethernet cable would never offer the level of protection and reliability as pin connections on a watercraft.

 

If the Helix 7 is not the "N" version, there is no networking capability. Waypoints will need to be moved between units with an SD card. To network and share waypoints the unit must be the G3N version, which I have on my bow.

The G2N shares waypoints as well doesn’t it?

If I recall correctly, Helix G2N units other than the Helix 7 will: it's a limitation only of the Helix 7 G2N.

Make sure you update your helix’s to the newest version.

Which transducers fit/networking issues/sharing transducers/what-with-what/etc. gets pretty complicated for my feeble brain. For that reason, I just call HB tech service and ask exactly what I need to do to accomplish what I want to do.

 

Saves me a whole bunch of head hurt ?
