Johnson 5hp starting after 4 years

Featured Replies

Ok... I have a flat bottom I bought a 2 stroke Johnson 5hp for 4 years ago. I am FINALLY putting it on the boat. We are going camping next week so I am trying to get her up and running. Drained the gear oil, and plan to replace the plugs. The fuel pump is easy to remove, so I will clean that, probably the carb too, (it will be a bit of a pain). Is there anything else I need to do before starting and using it. Honestly, this is the first time I have messed with a boat motor... any and all advice is appreciated. THANKS!

Fuel lines and bulb are cheap replacements that can cause problems after sitting that long. Start with fresh and if possible non ethanol fuel with additive and let it run awhile to make sure all is good.

Depending on the vintage / year your engine needs outboard oil-gasoline mixture 24:1 or 50:1 ?

Does this engine have external gas tank?

Not too much to go wrong if was running 4 years ago. Gas left in the carb is a problem turns to varnish like substance that needs to be cleaned out. Water impeller dries out. Starter pull cord may need to be replaced.

I would take out a spark plug and squirt some gas-oil mix into the cylinder and slow turn the engine over a few time to lubricate the piston before starting.

Remember to adjust the idle fuel mixture knob about 3/4 open, pull out the choke before pull starting. Push the choke back in after it starts.

Good luck,

Tom

Definitely get rid of old fuel. Other than that, sounds like you’ve got it covered
