I need 2 reels, looking for recommendations

Featured Replies

Im looking for 2 reels, looking to spend $100-200 a piece. One for crankbaits, the other for frogs. Considering getting a Shimano SLX MGL for crankbaits, but looking for input from others much more knowledgeable about reels than I am.

I only have diawa and shimano, but don't have experience with the slx.  I feel like you can't go wrong with either of their options in your price range.  Maybe start with one from either brand and use time on the water to determine your second purchase.  Personally, my crankbait reel is a jdm bantam 18 in 7.1:1 and my frog reel is a tat 200 in 7.3:1 and I'm very happy with both.

My frog rod has a Daiwa Tatula 150H with 50 lb. Sufix 832. Usually $160, but you can look for sales. (Good luck on that!)

Sounds like you're throwing little cranks if you're considering the SLX MGL. Sorry, but I can't help you there.      jj

The SLX is an amazing value for the money! That's all my son uses now. The 70 MGL doesn't hold enough line for bigger cranks and long casts but does great for lighter line and smaller cranks. It's also a great option for flipping, pitching and punching. The DC version is what my son uses for frogs. It can bomb a 1/2oz hollow body frog a really long distance. I have an XT version listed in the for sale section of you're looking for one.

I honestly don’t think you can find a better rod at that price point than the SLX. To me it is head and shoulders above every other rod in that price range.

I think the OP is asking for REEL recommendations, not rods..?

I don't do much cranking, so can't help there, but I can highly recommend the Diawa Tatula 150, or even the 100 for  frog reel. I even used my Diawa Fuego frogging for a day, without any issues.

one curado 150 for frog.

one slx for your crankbait.

smart to get both with DC break system.

So I ended up going with the Curado K 6.2:1 for the crankbait reel. Still undecided on the frog reel...

Don't fish a frog but lews super duty lfs has a 150yd line cap and are about $150 on amazon. The 8 gear ratio models have a flipping switch, I picked one up for a spare football jig reel. Or you could get another K with a higher gear ratio, those are solid reels.

   ^^ Good advice! ^^        jj

Tatula 150 is a great frog reel. That’s what I use with 65lb braid and it can chuck a frog a country mile. That or another Curado K would be good
