Shimano Curado K or Curado DC

Featured Replies

I know that's its been discussed before on here but I wanted a fresh opinion. Is the DC worth the extra money or no? I already have the DC and love it but I'm getting the itch to make a new purchase lol. So K or DC?

Thanks for your time?

For the price of a Curado DC, you could get a 200 K, and a 150 size MGL spool from JDM Scorpion MGL. Then you could pretty much handle any lures except BFS lures, with the same if not better casting distance.

I have owned both and this is just my opinion. Depends on what you want to do and your skill level. Along with what line and lures you want to throw. There is ZERO benefit to a DC reel if you are throwing heavy lures on braid or pitching jigs/t-rigs etc. If you are throwing baits that are lighter or tend to catch wind and your thumb isn't "trained" then a DC reel will help you. Think, throwing spinnerbaits into a 20 mph wind on 14 lb fluoro, then it will help. For me, they weren't needed. In fact, I think they are a bit harder to use because I think I lost distance trying to get them dialed in and ended up having them so loose that I might as well not been using the DC function. I would recommend them to someone who hasn't quiet got the hang of a baitcaster yet, but if can use your thumb, they are not needed.

How much does the JDM scorpion retail for?

$183 at Asian Portal. You'll be glad you got this one instead of the K. Way less touchy into the wind with lighter baits and wind catching baits like flatside cranks, etc. It's also easier to dial in when changing typical baits.

Is the product still top of the line like shimano? I'm asking cause I have zero experience with JDM products

I’d buy the straight K.

JDM Shimano reels have the same quality that you'll get from Shimano reels in US market, sometimes even better. The only catch is the lack of warranty.  You can order JDM reels from many Japan websites such as Asian Portal and Digitaka, just as you order things from US websites. For spools and other parts, Hedgehog Studio and Plat are the ways to go.

I bought my fiance a Curado DC because she's new to baitcaster, but I use it for skipping lures under docks and overhangs.

Skipping a baitcaster...I don't care HOW good you are...you WILL eventually backlash , and horribly.  The DC prevents that.

Don't get thrown off by the JDM label. It's a Curado K painted red-ish for the Japanese market, but the difference maker is its lighter MGL spool. Personally I find the K to be a bit of a turd with the stock spool. I'd give up its better build and smoothness for the versatility SLX MGL, which I prefer otherwise. If you're throwing lipless cranks, heavier deep diving cranks, or heavier swim jigs, etc, the K is fine. It'll launch them. Downsize at all from those type of baits and dialing it in becomes a tedious exercise, and your thumb better be on point every second.

Isn’t that basically the Curado MGL 150? I would recommend one, I’ve only had it a couple months but I’ve thrown everything, even down to a 1/10th Ned Rig, without issue.

Interested in finding out if the Curado MGL 150 spool is also a direct swap

I don't own a Curado MGL 150, but I am sure it uses a different frame than Scorpion MGL.  The spool also has a different SVS brake than Scorpion MGL's and Curado K's,  so I wouldn't bet on the spools are interchangeable.  It also has the "Silent Tune" feature, which is not included in Scorpion or K.

I would do Curado DC, It is very nice and totally worth the money.

I have it paired with my curado XH rod for top water or punching with 2oz weight for thick mats in California summer lakes.

Really depends on what are you gonna use the reels for. If you plan to use with bigger line like 20-25lb then 200 K would benefit for more line capacity. The DC and 200K are pretty much the same frame and weight class.

If you wanna venture into different type bait, smaller size frame and less weight (more comfortable to move the rod around) then look at Curado 150 MGL.

If you wanna get into more setups and cover all type of fishing you ever need and with the budget of DC, you might be able to get both SLX XT and SLX MGL.
