Broomstick for big jigs?

Featured Replies

Well the Abu Garcia Veracity I ordered just came in. What I thought was a 7ft Heavy fast was actually an extra fast. Doing a tip test it is about as stiff as my Fury 735 but with less tip action. I was gonna replace the fury with the Veracity as a frog/football jig rod for the lower weight and higher sensitivity but I doubt it has enough tip for frogging. Would it still work well for 3/4 to 1oz jigs? I bet those could easily load it up for casting but what about hooksets and fighting fish? The rod is lighter and very sensitive so that’s a plus lol. Thank you ?

I'm different in the sense that I prefer a rod with less tip for frogging, and one with a little more tip for throwing a jig. But that doesn't matter.

The rod will most likely be perfect for jigs which are that heavy. a 3/4 oz as read on the package is more like 1 oz + when considering the hook, weedguard and trailer. Same for a 1 oz jig, the whole package is probably closer to 1 3/8 oz.. So your rod will definitely load up weights that heavy.

I prefer an xfast for driving the hook home.

Same here.

I agree with the comments above me.  I don't like my rod tip flexing while working jigs. I'd probablt like how stout your veracity is...helps to combat line stretch.

Some people go with moderate fast because it helps offset user error that we all make when we get a hit time to time (setting the hook too early) but it does you no favor on hooksets. Fast is the happy medium between hooksets and compensating user error, but extra fast should still work.
