2" Ball Hitch Coupler Suggestion Needed for Pictured Trailer Tongue

Featured Replies

Hey There, guys

Can anyone suggest a link to a coupler that would fit to replace the current one I have in my trailer?  Please see pic below.  Thanks!

Looks a little rusted. I’m sure @TnRiver46 has a solution. Most of his stuff is rusty lol

Pretty much any coupler repair kit for a 2" will work.

Hah, yeah rusted but also the coupler itself is bent, so I don't get a good purchase on my ball hitch.  Found something on agri-supply site that looked like it would work, but they won't ship to CA because of the cancer warning that has to go on every fishing product known to man ... and probably lots of other products.  here's what I found

Perfect!  That looks good, thanks @MN Fisher

Why not just go to the Tractor Supply store in Moorpark and buy a replacement (weld on / bolt on) coupler and take it apart and use only the parts you need. May be a little more expensive but it will work.

Which brings me to the part where people think a lock prevents people from stealing a trailer when all you have to do is unscrew the retaining nut on the bottom to loosen the coupling.

Given the chains and coupler are rusted, and the hitch painted, I'd get on my back and check the underside of that hitch (and entire trailer), not only for rust, but for cracks and stress areas.

Also check the ball receiver to ensure it's not oblong on the inside. Hitch balls are often made of stronger metal than the receiver, and it can grind it into oval, or widen it out like a melon baller to the point it's not safe to use, and must be replaced.  Using hitch grease prevents that from happening, but many folks don't use it.

Thanks @Glenn - I'll check it out.  Good info.

With occasional replacement parts...right Russ? ;)

Frankentrailer roll on!

@Smallies, somebody could probably just cut that off at the seam and weld a whole new one on there for pretty cheap if the kit doesn’t work out. Fab shop, trailer shop, etc

Or cut it off, get a bolt-on on, drill holes...done

That's what I'm doing with mine next year...moron before me put a 2" wide coupler on a 3" frame...by squeezing the front end of the frame.

Thanks @TnRiver46 — the part worked great.  Gonna take it over to my local trailer guy and give it a once over for rust, safety on the road, etc.  Gotta replace the taillights as well — guy I bought the boat from didn't have submersibles on it.  It's a wonder one of them still works...
