Why I switched to braid for the last 5 years.

Featured Replies

At 84 & having stopped breathing 5 times & come back.  I took the attitude my reflexes are gone.  So I took stock of why I was missing solid hook ups so much. 4# mono Ande was too stretchy with 60 to 100' trailing a small Rapala.

Worse was all the dull, bent and broken hook points.  So I did a 100' test of the Ande 4# next to the 4# braided at 100'.

It was ridiculous to ever consider 4# mono ever again.  So I respooled everything with 6# braided.  I am a happy Geezer again. C & R bass.  Bring in perch for seniors again.

Age & medications can affect your C & R  rate.

I'm glad you are still fishing at 84 . You have to do what you have to do .

I saw my dads last living brother yesterday . He is 96 . He was talking fishing with me and was sad because he cant get out anymore . So I have a plan for him that I hope to follow through on . If I can get him in my boat , its a 22 foot Lowe deck boat plenty of seating , he will be comfortable  , I'll put him on some white bass . They are plentiful and easy to catch and I can usually locate schools of them in the summer .

Bingo scaleface.

Pontoons are outstanding boats for incapacitated people. and children or pets.   Thefish in my bay are not spooked by boats at all. Constant daytime traffic all weekend.

I just realized the symbols in the lower right corner show up as notifications............... Why I am not left alone too often.

Another Oh well.

Excellent. Adapt & Overcome.

i like braid, but you really have to pay attention to nicks and abrasion when using it,  seems like more than flouro at least for me. also knots.

Glad you’re still able to fish. My dad stopped in his 70s because of bad arthritis in his wrists and hands.

Personally, I just switched my last braid reel back to mono. I get better hook ups with mono. Actually broke 30 pound power pro twice in 2 trips, one on a cast of all things. Maybe it was old, but not THAT old.

Maybe I’ll try braid again someday.

I have found that braid can be a shorter UV life span. I find the always exposed thin strands can die much quicker than a thick piece of mono.  So each spring I cut off 8'.  Has stopped any breakoffs.  I can see & feel the change to soft white strands. Still worth it,  in cutting weeds if a fish burrows into them.
