Gamakatsu Round Bend: Should I go standard or 2X?

Featured Replies

I’m replacing the hooks on a Red Eye Shad. I haven’t seen the standard Gamakatsu round bend compared to the 2X. Would the 2X be too beefy or the standard be too small?. If anyone has experience with these hooks can someone give me an educated answer. Also the size I’m getting is size 4.

I would think that is dependent on your line size, line type, rod used, and drag setting

i.e either can work

edit: I see now that you requested an answer from someone with experience with the hooks. Well, I do not, but I also see that for some reason no one has replied on this yet

I would use the heavy wire hooks and move up to a size 2, assuming you're throwing 1/2 or 3/4 ounce baits.  Use the 4's on the 1/4 oz.  baits.  I use the Mustad KVD's,  but used VMC 9651 round bends (short shank, heavy wire) for a long time.

It's a head game.  They both work.

For a Red Eye Shad (lipless cranks) > 2X

Crankbaits > Regulars unless they are the bigger cranks

Jerkbaits > G. Finesse

Personally I like Owner ST-36's the best.  Sharpest hook I have found that stays sharp.  My only complaint, it's easy to stick yourself with these.  I always use a pair of pliers when handling them.
