i want to bring you a spinning rig as well. I only have Med rods with 2500 series reels.  Too light?  I’ve never fought a big striper before.  I could use my 4000 salt reel, but I don’t have a heavier rod.  Trying Not to buy a new rod for this random trip.

What you have will work.

The delta has excellent Striper fishing.

Suggest a 8’ Inshore 2 piece rod rated for lures to 4 oz for your 4000 reel.

Most of the river and shore striper fishermen around here use 4000 reels and matched rods. We get stripers from 10 inches up to 40 lb. when fishing plugs or bait. Its better to be prepared for that monster.  

Coming to OK to do some striper fishing?  So I guess that means Texoma, right?  

Texoma stripers tend to be a bit smaller than saltwater stripers.  35.12 lbs is the record.  Still a big fish, mind you.  And they can put up a real fight for their size.  But it's not quite the same thing as fishing true salt water.  12lbs is a big stripper there, but 20+lbs isn't unheard of.  The average is probably around 3-4lbs.  

 

When you go, be sure to double check all of the fishing regulations.  Since Texoma is on the boarder of Oklahoma and Texas, it has some special rules regarding licenses.  So a regular Texas or Oklahoma fishing license won't worth there.  And a Texoma license won't work outside of that lake.

my brother just called and told me airline tix are really affordable now.  I bought my tickets.

 

now to buy up some striper lures.  I am REFUSING to buy a new rod and reel.  this is probably the only time I'll do this trip.  no sense buying a one time use rod.

If you have some large JBs, swimbaits, topwaters, and A-rigs, you should be GTG. White, Chart. or shad colors will do.

I have a 8" long jerk bait I bought when I must have been dreaming.  hah.

your Gear is fine, going OK you bring right lures for casting specially by the dam. I upload pics of my stripers tackle for you, if you need to identify any of them let me know, basically oversize jerk baits with large paddle tails and use lots of chartreuse also jointed sebile and Raphala.

also once you there and casting you can have your spinning set up with number 2 to 4 hooks(circle or bait holder) and use chicken liver and blood worm.

I just catch 20 of them from the shore in Castaic.

There is also Keystone which has a spawning and reproducing population of stripers. Directly below the keystone dam is gpod striper fishing from the bank with a long cast. 

 

As far as gear I used a MH casting setup but I didnt actually catch anything the one time I went. It was crazy packed the day I went.

We are camping for three nights. I’ll cast from morning to dusk. It’s a far trip for me.  I’m not bowing down to a skunk.

They will bite at night.

Stripers are fast moving true bass feeding in schools. Unlike LMB they strike faster moving lures or lures that look wounded. Slender jointed crank baits, 3/4-1 oz lipless cranks and Underspin Preacher jigs both work good.

From shore you limit yourself with standard bass rods under 7’6” do to casting distance to reach the stripers, unless they are tight to the bank.

Big difference between stripers and LMB is speed, they make a long hard run when hooked.
