A bait that no one eats for long.

Had some nice big ground SLUGS.   Fish sucked them in. Less than 5 seconds later they were spit out undamaged

Here’s another they rarely mess with, and spit them out unscathed if they do - those black swimming whirligig beetles.

You can set the hook up to 5 times in 5 seconds! Assuming the whole point is to catch the fish.....

I saw en episode of River Monsters that focused on the invasion of Cane Toads there.  Many of the native predators and fish began to eat them and then die because of the poison the toads have on their backs.  Barramundi in particular, which are kind of like a supersized bass, were dying in droves.  Eventually, the Barramundi built up a resistance to the Cane Toad poison.

I was too interested in the visual watching to bother. 2 other fish did the same routine.

You are right.

Why would anyone want to deal with a slug as bait?

Why would anyone use anything that looks like a Breakfast Sausage ?

Threading on a big, nasty, struggling night crawler is nasty enough for me. I'd projectile vomit trying to hook a slug.

Many slugs apparently have pretty nasty tasting mucous. That's their defense system.

Most creatures wont touch them.

Yup, as a kid I used pretty much every thing that could possibly be bait on a hook. Slugs never did well.
