looking for a new rod and reel

Featured Replies

Im looking for a new bait caster combo i would like to get some others thoughts on what i should get. I would like to keep it below 125-150.

Lots of good ones these days. I can't comment on a rod, but will say the Less LFS is a good reel for the price.

That is a tough price for good combo. If you can save up another $25-40 it will give you a larger selection/choices. Keep an eye out for sales/discounts.

Reels: Daiwa Tatula CT, Lew's Speed Spool LFS

Rods: Daiwa Aird X, Powell Diesel, Lamiglas XP Bass, Falcon Bu Coo, Dobyns Maverick/Fury

Keeping it at that price range will limit you on either the rod or the reel. I’d go with a Daiwa Fuego reel and a Daiwa AIRD-X rod.

Of course, you’ll have to pick the power and action of the rod best suited to the baits you plan to fish. MH/F is a good all-around and works well with Texas rigs, jigs, etc. If fishing crankbaits, topwater (except frogs), you would be better served with a M/F. They come in 6’6”, 7’ and 7’3” lengths. They also have a 7’ HF if you’re looking for a rod for frogs.

A Fuego 100HS 7.3:1 would be a good reel.

Can never go wrong with a Shimano SLX. Usually hovers around the $90-$100 mark. Look for sales as I've seen them as low as $80. Tried and tested reel that will last your for years. As far as rods Abu Garcia makes some very budget friendly options. Their vengeance series is great entry level rod and costs $40-$50. If you're looking for something a little nicer then Abu Garcia's vendetta is a great bang for the buck at just under $80.

Daiwa Aird X ($55 msrp) and a Daiwa Fuego CT ($110 msrp) will fill your needs exceptionally well.

Another option would be a Dobyns Colt series rod ($80 msrp) paired with an Abu Garcia Max STX ($80 msrp) casting reel. bonus points for matching colors!

A 7' Aird-X H/F and a Fuego CT-XS (8.1:1) is my current frogging rig

A 7' Aird-X MH/F with a Patriarch 7.9:1 is my spinner/chatter/buzzbait rig - a Fuego CT-HS (7.3:1) would be an acceptable replacement for the Patriarch.

Daiwa CC80 $50 w/free shipping on fleabay.  Shimano Caius B $80.  Daiwa Aird X $55.  Or Berkley Lightning $40.  Okuma has a couple reels at about $80 and $82 that you probably can find for less.  No experience with Okuma low cost reels, but really like the higher priced ones I have.

Abu, Lew's, and KastKing all have combos in your price range.  You can also find combos at Dick's Sporting Goods and Sports Academy...to name 2 stores...that are well within your budget.  However, I can't help with any of them as I have zero experience with low cost combos.

Add $26 and you can find the CA-80 on fleabay...skip the carbon frame, go with aluminum.

Add some more bonus points for the flipping switch on the Abu Max STX. It’s the reason I bought that reel.

You can find good deals on the SLX combo. A couple of reputable sites sell the combo for around $140. I don't think you will find a better rod/reel combo at that price.

The Shimano SLX casting rod and reel combo is an excellent choice, and is available within your stated budget range. As a general use rig, I like the 7'0" MH/F rod paired with an SLX 150XG 8.2:1 reel.

Bought separately, those two items sell for $200, but are $139 together. Let your fingers do the searching.
