Busted rod tip (help)

Featured Replies

Have a two piece and was casting it around in the backyard and after about two hours of casting around It just separated for no reason, and I was sure I put it on really tight too.  second rod tip half went flying into the air and landed tip first onto the cement, falling onto the grass on its side. everything component wise looks completley fine except the eye tip took the absolute brunt of the fall and bent the eye out of place. Frustrated that this happened I tried bending it back and cracked the ceramic eye guide insert. now im asking if it is worth buying a new eye guide for a twenty dollar rod.... this is why I hate two pieces, even using wax ?

Happens all the time, it always cracks me up sneaking up a tiny trout stream and the top half splashes into the water. I always replace the top guide if it’s broken on $20 rods , the other guides aren’t quite a cost effective use of time

sporting goods stores sell a tip replacement kits for cheap, the glue holds ok but gobs up. Super glue works better I’m told but I’ve never tried that

Thank you, those are the kits I was referring to. Gotta keep matches in the boat just for that reason

I do buy big box of tips in so many sizes, I fixed three of my rods and put them back to work, And I left 100 more tips for future. It is good you buy in bulk in so many sizes, so if you need shorten the rod, you can find the right diameter tip for it.

That has never happened to me when casting a 2-piece rod. Never ?

The first rod I bought was a two piece spinning rod.  I was an absolute newbie and after I assembled the rod, I made the lotion to cast without any line. The rod top flew off and landed in the tall grass in my yard tip first close to the ground and broke. First ever cast and not a good sign, lol. I was able to exchange it and I called the new rod (which was pretty much the same rod but different color my “Walmart Special”.

Fortunately, it is a surprisingly easy fix that I’ve done myself and if I can do it, anyone can. Repair it if the rod means enough to you to fix. Mine was.

You should never wax your ferrule, that is something that was done to metal ferrule rods 50+ years ago. Your ferrule is a much softer material and the wax just collects dust and sand which turns into a world class lapping compound and wears out the ferrule giving you a sloppy fit that causes tips to fly off. Some of us have used two piece rods for 60+ years with zero problems, that said we don't fish all day without checking the ferrule, the fly anglers, surf anglers, etc. all check their ferrules from time to time, if you don't you can also blow one up.
