Too many of the same rods?

Featured Replies

I have five 7’ MHF rods in my rigs and I realized that no matter how many different actions and lengths I try at the store I always gravitate to these rods. Am I doing myself a disservice by only buying these rods? I am happy with all of them don’t get me wrong and they work just fine with all the techniques and such. I’m just curious if maybe I need to force myself to go outside of my comfort zone.

Looks like you answered your own question. If you were frogging with them and not getting good hook sets then you would need to power up. If you were cranking and ripping hooks out then you would need to power down. Only you can answer the question.

When I started in the kayak all my rods were MH/Fast.  No issues at all.

Now that the bug has bit I still usually have at least two, sometimes three, out of the seven I usually bring.

Well to be completely honest I was beginning to feel that I may be able to feel a bite or something a lot better If I were to buy a different type of rod. I knew from the get go when I started researching bait casting and the rods and such that the 7’ MHF was the Swiss Army knife of rods so I think I let that sink in real good.

I only used 7' MH rods for many years. I could probably still get away with it although I am more comfortable with other rods at this point. Humans are a creature of habit.

I know for me, it took me quite a few years of fishing before I really started to fully appreciate the benefits of getting very specific with my gear for a given technique/bait.

Question is, are these 5 MH rods the same model and brand? Different brand/model even in the same MH range 1/4-1oz lure weight would have different action but similar power. I only have two that exactly the same  from 5 that I have. I use different action for different type of techniques.
If we are talking about Medium/Fast rod I have maybe 10 rods altogether (6’6” -7’2”) each rod can be use the same in general but excellent in different techniques.

3 of the 5 are the same brand while the last two are a carbon lite and a lews.

I did the same. One other thing about 7' and shorter rods is, you can find some pretty solid performers at a very reasonable price. Budget rods ($50 or so) pretty much stop at 7'. I caught a lot of bass including my PB LM pitching jigs and Trigs on a 7' MH Lightning rod.

You need a couple HF rods.

But I fish a lot of dark water wood, pads and thick stuff.

7’ -7’3’ MH is my sweet spot. I use a 7’ MH crankbait rod for jerkbaits, a 7’3” Heavy rod for pitching and frogs, and a 7’ M for wacky and any smaller stuff.

Otherwise - 7’, 7’1”, and 7’3” MH/F for everything else. I could settle for one 7’ MH for everything if I had to and I wouldn’t complain.
I bought a BPS Rick Clunn spinnerbait rod in the late ‘90s and didn’t think it was any different from  my other 7’ MH rods. I’ve bought a few technique specific rods over the years and now they’re all gathering dust in my garage.
That said, I do have my eye on a 7’9” swimbait rod. It never ends I guess.

See my answer in your other recent thread.  I'm another with more MH rods than any other power.  Not all Fast action, tho.  My wife will never see this thread, but I'll keep my number of MH rods to myself anyway.  :lol1:
