storm swim baits

Featured Replies

Hello all. I recently purchased a few packs of Storm's Wild Eye Swim baits. I have never fished swim baits before so I am in need of advice on technique and when and where to use such lures.

I hate those things. First, take a whiff of them....  :-? Worst smell I've ever smelt.... I've never had any luck on them either, IMO, the have an awfull action and just don't look that realistic.... my two cents.... :D

I feel more confident w/ them alreadyhaha

They are the first and more often than not the only bait that I use. Color doesn't seem to matter. I only use the flat tail type ( never tried the other tails never needed to. I use the 3" 99% of the time ( not near as much luck on 2" or 4").

I bounce them along the bottom. In a lake with a lot of sticks on the bottom they can be tough but with braided line they can most often be pulled out. You can swim them higher if you need to. I turned 6 or 8 people on to them so far and everyone of em swears by them.

I've caught crappie, LgM Bass, Striper, White bass & Walleye all on the same bait.

They have a very realistic action in my opinion just like the tale of a small Bluegill or big shad.

Let us know good or bad how you do with them.

I would have to agree with G.S.S. , I think that storm swimbaits are terrible.  :'( They could work in your area though, you never know untill you try them.

I've seen them work, I've never used them, but I fish with a guy who does. Like all swimbaits, dont' expect 20 strikes in an hour. But they do work.

I view a storm swimbait as a begginners swimbait.  It's cheap, and it catches fish.  Now, it's not going to compare to a Hud, but it'll help you get a feel for the swimbait thing.

Yikes I just logged on to brag about the ones I just bought 6 for $2.39 and see what everone though about them. I think I bought them right and the look good. Hope they will work.

Ooops, i didn't answer your question.  Here's a tip. The key to catching big fish with a swimbait is simple

( ;D)  You have to fish were big fish are, and you have to throw it religiously.

storm wiggle warts = great crankbaits

storm swimbaits = crapolla.

I have a girlfriend that picked up bass fishing just about the time Bassresource went to Fork in March.

Short story, she has over 50 bass on the Storm Swims this year already.    Call them what ever you want, they work if fished.

She has the right gearing to be throwing them,  she is willing to swim "ANY" type of swim bait slow enought to give it proper action.       She has gained confidence with STorms.     Would a Storm work in Cali?   Don't know, but they do in our neck of the woods, and thats all that counts.

SouthB - I never worry about the color but then again I fish in the dark a lot.

As far as color goes they make one that looks like a shad, they make rainbow trout colored and a bluegill looking one. I mainly use the 3" size and only use the shad tail.

You can add a spinner from generic bins or from a beetle spin to make them more weedless.

It's hard to find the exact color that you want but they can be had.

If you can't find and want a particular color I've ordered from this place and he is fast and cheap ship

see page 23 for colors.

In my opinion it is the action of the tail more so not the color that makes the difference.

Man, that sucks that all your Storms were broken off by monster bass.  You should buy some more.

What?  That was the reason you have zero, right?

I've tried to tell people. not bad for first trip out.

That's ok nobody buying them will make them cheaper for me and you Dabes.

If they ever stop making them I will die. Been thinking of buying maybe $200 just to be safe.

I havent been able to find the bill gill version. I think that would work real good for my friends pond. All he has is blue gills and bass.

You should ask my friend who cant catch a cold if they work and he will show you a picture of his 9lber on a storm bluegill. (must have a good immune system  :D)

never tried storm swimbaits for bass, but the croaker color is deadly for snook.

I dont know if anyone else has had this problem with these baits but I had a bass rip the tail completely off the first one i threw. That was the first bass I caught on one of these baits and I had to put the second one on from the pack of three right after I caught that fish.

Hi there,

It is interesting how the storm swimbait question resurfaces every now and then....

I had the chance to try several of them, with varied results. The Wild Eye ones (which I tried in various forms such as bluegill, roach, etc in various sizes) have all failed me.

On the other hand, the Kick'n Minnow ones have been quite succesful for me in both 4 and 6 inches, in several colors.

When I started using them, I had no special expectations or biases for either. The interesting thing, I know at least one person who fishes regularly the same reservoirs as I do, who has completely failed with the Kickin'minnow, yet he does well with the Wildeyes!

It will be really interesting to see the results if/when I fish together (at the same time / place) with this friend... Until then, no more wildeyes for me, but my stock of kick'n minnows will be maintained!

Not sure which ones you are using all of mine come in packs of 6 ( for 3"ers) 5 pack I think for larger. I use the swim shad ( the ones with the flat tail perpendicular to the body). I've caught 20 bass on one lure. Only failures I've had was ones that were wore out from too many fish and they tore the hole body right off of the jig. I've only lost maybe one tail in 3 years.
