Do you think a Dobyns Fury is superior to a Mojo Bass casting rod in a 7’ Medium Heavy Moderate Fast for throwing cranks, spinnerbaits and whopper ploppers?

Featured Replies

I’m debating switching it up, been pleased with St Croix but have heard from some that Dobyns edges them out in casting equipment.  Would like to use for throwing crank baits, 5/16-1/2 oz spinnerbaits/Chatterbaits and a whopper plopper 90. What are your experiences?

I'm not a big fan of the St. Croix Mojo rods. I've just felt that they feel a little tip heavy and just dont feel right to me. In most cases, I would choose a Fury over the Mojo because I think they feel better balanced.

That being said,... That 7' MH-MF Mojo is the exception. It has a pretty nice tip on it and it's pretty well balanced. I liked it enough that I bought a second one. Both have 6spd Revo3 S reels on them. I use one for Whopper Plopper 90s, and the other has a reel on it to throw small chatterbaits on braid.

I love my Fury 705cb. Never used the Mojo in that action but you won’t be disappointed in the Fury

Falcon lowrider all 'round for about the same coin. ?

Completely agree.

I owned a Fury 705 CB and found it to be nothing special: when it lost a guide insert, I got rid of it. Much more impressed with the Lowriders and now own several.

Know this is going against the grain as the Fury gets plenty of love on this board while the Falcon Lowrider is a best kept secret for some reason.

Haven't tried a Lowrider. I like the feel of their rods. But the only place near me that carries them is Academy, and they only seem to have the Buucco (spelling) which has EVA foam grips, which I don't like.

I just looked up the Lowrider, and it looks like it has cork grips. I'll have to watch for them somewhere and take a look. Maybe Sportsmans Warehouse north of here has them.

With you on the EVA grips, the end grip on the Fury was EVA and it was one of things I disliked.

Shame that your Academy doesn't carry the Lowriders, which I consider nearly unbeatable quality at that price point. Fortunately my local Academies carry the Lowriders and Tatulas, one even had some Kadens until I bought 'em out. Everything else is low end. Took the opportunity during recent sales to upgrade the weaker links in my rod collection with those three brands.

Ok, first off, I do like my Dobyns Fury 705CB for crankbaits. It’s a nice rod. Having said that, in terms of fit, finish and feel, I believe my Falcon Lowrider All ‘Round Fast MH/F is superior. In retrospect, I would have gone with either a Lowrider Cranker II (7’ 6”) MH/MF or the Finesse Jig (6’ 10”) MH/MF.

The mojo looks way cooler, that neon green hurts my eyes. My daughter uses three of the mojo's but doesn't throw cranks. I've fished with the mojo's and they are excellent rods for the price, the MH would do fine for spinnerbaits and ploppers. I wouldn't throw more than a square bill on a MH though. I'm sure the Dobyns are great rods, I just don't dig the color.

I have both rods and prefer the Mojo for treble hook baits like poppers and shallow cranks. IMO, it has a more parabolic bend and flex yet still with plenty of backbone. I use the Fury for my buzz baits.

Why not more than a square bill, and do you mean just as far as cranks or lure weights in general on MH?

Wouldn't want to fish a deep diver on a MH just my personal preference. I'm sure some guys do it but I would prefer a medium or glass cranking stick for anything deeper than 10 ft.
