Hello all. I have a medium power moderate action casting setup and I would like to throw these lures on it 

Top water 

Shallow cranks

Small liplesses

Flukes

Jerkbaits

Light shaky heads

Light Texas rig

Senkos

Mini wire baits

Tiny jigs

Little swimbaits

I really like using braid. I was thinking either 20-30 lb size?

Pretty light baits. I usually go with 10 lb mono, maybe even 8 with that, or an equivalent braid. Tiny jigs won't be easy to throw on a casting rod with 30 pound braid, in my opinion, and with a medium rod I don't know that you need to go very strong anyways.

Thank you! By tiny jigs I meant 1/8th of an ounce without the trailer. I have a medium heavy setup with 30 lb braid and it casts 1/4 lures phenomenally, so I think I really can’t go wrong with 20 or 30, but I just want to make sure I get it right!

I personally would go with some kind of mono because you included topwater and lighter lures in the list. But it's more about personal preference in my opinion.

Thank you. I have had some issues with mono and also I just don’t like the memory and coiling. It just gets frustrating. The light baits aren’t a must just a plus. I mostly just want it for the crankbaits, top water and weightless plastics.

Use whatever you like.  Personally, I'd go with 30# braid.  But I use 30# braid for most everything anyway.  

8#-10# Yo-Zuri Hybrid would be my pick for all that.

I am definitely willing to do smaller mono as long as I put the spool in hot water before putting it on the reel!

I had 15 lb yo-zuri hybrid on it before because it was my all around reel and I liked it for the most part, excluding all of the memory and coiling

5 lb Maxima Ultra Green Copolymer line on spinning tackle for 1/8 finesse lures. 11 lb Sunline Armillo on Medium fast baitcasting for top water for everything 3/16 to 1/4 oz.

Thanks Tom! The lures I plan on using will probably be 1/8th to 5/8th of an ounce. I am torn between 10 lb mono and 20-30 lb braid. I think the braid would be more versatile though? Switching from a 1/8th ounce shaky head to a  1/2 ounce top water and then to a 3/16 spinnerbait is all things I have had luck with on braid in the past. Does anyone have tricks for straightening mono/copolymer?

I would go 30# braid if you are set on t-rigs and jigs. The no stretch braid should help compensate for the moderate action of the rod and let you still get good hook sets. The hooks will be light wire after all. The soft rod should do all the work with treble hook baits, just be sure to set your drag appropriately. A little tighter than normal for single hooks and a little looser for treble.

 

If you want to feel the difference grab some big game mono in 8# and try it out. If you don't like it you will only have spent $7 and will have some line for backing laying around. 

 

If you are comfortable with 30# braid dropping down to 20# shouldn't be too difficult, just keep in mind that you will have to put in a little more effort than normal to make sure the line stays tight on the spool.

I am going to try 10 lb hybrid. What’s the worst that can happen? It’s 7 dollars for a spool and mores worth. Thanks for all of the help guys!

10# Yo-Zuri Hybrid is .012D high memory line.

10# Sunline Super Natural is .010D low memory line, 330 yards is $8.

Keep in mind, 10lb hybrid has an average breaking strength of 16.5lbs. Far more than you need. This is why I suggested 8# for lines like hybrid and big game (another line far stronger than advertised). They have a larger diameter than most "higher quality" lines as well. For your purposes, if going with budget line, consider downsizing. This will also help out with the coiling.

I plan on getting the line in person which is why I chose the hybrid, but I think they have the sunline! I would just be concerned with the breaking strength but I guess that won’t be an issue

But 8 lb won’t be too small of a diameter for a baitcaster?

Look at the line diameter. 

TW lists each line with both strength and diameter.

This isn’t that difficult.

Off the top of my head, I think most 30lb braid is the same diameter as most 8lb mono. If you get the sunline, going back to 10# might be the way to go. Sunline usually has a break strength much closer to what it says on the box, but has a much smaller diameter. 

 

10# sunline and 8# hybrid are far more similar in strength and size than 10# sunline and 10# hybrid. Honestly, when dealing with mono and copoly, its best to find the line diameter you like best and buy based off that. Rated lb test is all over the place. 

 

 

Alright so I ended up going with 20 lb sufix 832 braid, I don’t regret a thing! I can throw about anything on this and even a 1/16th oz Texas rig with a zoom finesse worm a good distance. Got one at a really tough pond shortly after
