Hadn't heard of these but they look good on paper. A worm gear at the $100 price point is great. These don't appear to have Stella sealing and the anti reverse is the older white cage style but for freshwater it should make no difference.

Actually one of the most famous Brazlian ocean charter used them. Cap. Tuba. Very resilient reels, for the price. I prefer the white cage AR clutch than the cheap plasitc ones Shimano started using since 2019.

It's funny you disagree with me using Alan Hawk picture since he was the first one to denounce the downgrade in the AR clutch, in the 2019 Stella. This isn't an AR clutch on par with the Stella name.

Inside the clutch each brake cylinder has its own wire spring that keeps it in constant contact with the sleeve for instant braking, and to self adjust for wear. It's a superb design that works with complete reliability and compensates for internal wear and thermal changes, and since it was one day good enough for the Stella it certainly is more than enough for the Spheros. Another component that is shared with the Saragosa SW.

The great majority of the anti-reverse clutches in spinning reels have the generic design where plastic V springs are moulded into the cage, and those activate the brake cylinders. Those plastic springs have different life spans depending on the quality of the clutch, but ultimately they lose their elasticity and become permanently set, causing slippage and eventual failure.

If you read the review he is stating it is inferior compared to the previous iteration of Shimano's AR, not to the plastic cage.

 

Old Shimano AR > New Shimano AR > generic plastic cage
