"I like my purses belts and shoes are black.  Form over function.  I don't care how things look.  I won't buy things based on looks..  As long as they work.  I won't buy flashy purses shoes or belts.   I prefer black."

They seemed to disappear from production rods in the 1980s.

Seems to be becoming a lost art.

I like a nice decorative wrap above the fore grip or on the split section of the rear grip. I did one many moons ago, but really never perfected the art of it.

My first and only:

I like it. I think the little "imperfections" say "custom built". Sometimes (like on a crankbait rod) I will put a hook keeper in the split grip area.

I’m not a fan of any sort of bling on a fishing rod.
I’ve never bought a rod because of the way it looks.

Always Function over Form

I agree although I've not purchased rods solely on them being too brightly painted for my tastes.

So is this to simple of a decorative wrap? It is off a rod I have purchased in the last 6 years. I will go look at a rod that was passed on from my grandpa years ago. I think some old Zebcos I had back in the day didn’t look half bad.

So this was a simple wrap on an Ugly GX2 which really doesn’t count of course because well it’s on a mass produced rod. Not sure which way to take your answer because reading my post back I worded the question horribly.

If ugly could do that on a cheap rod others could do a little something more on a rod we pay 3x to 10x for.

As far as I know...all rods are pretty much hand made.

But that wrap...though its not elaborate...took someone a bit of time and thought.

What exactly is between the diamonds?

I think it is just the material of the rod. I assume the Ugly GX2s are still fiberglass. It is surprisingly not bad and being very short a nice kayak rod. The guide raps on it are 3 individual lines. It is nicer looking than many of my rods but ultimately I don’t buy them for looks. I own two of the baby blue Clunn rods which really proves that out.

Off topic but as I write this I really seem to like glass rods, I may need to try a St Croix or Dobyns glass rod someday.

Wraps and glass (S-glass/graphite blend).  Smith Super Strike, made for a round reel.
