Braided Line Help

Featured Replies

I currently run 30lb Power Pro super slick and have zero issues with line dig in. I want to try either J-braid 8x or Suffix 832 because Google says they are thinner and more supple but that makes me worried they will dig in more when casting. Anyone who uses these brands is 30lb good to go or should I run a little heavier. I like going as light as possible cause I don't fish cover and I feel like it cuts threw the water better.

Long as you spool it up nice and tight - the 30# 832 shouldn't give you an issue.

The smallest I go on Sufix 832 with a deep-spool baitcaster is 20-lb.

I use 20 to 25 yds 20-lb mono backing to make a spool arbor - 2/3 of the spool depth.

Never anything close to dig.

I go a lot smaller on Duel X-wire (PE#1, which is 22-lb), kinda comparable to J-braid, but only on shallow BFS spool, which fishes ML just fine. No line dig, never a backlash.

I run both and they work good. I don’t remember J Braid being softer. It’s my favorite of the 3 though.

I would try Sufix 131. It's next on my list because of the reviews on how far it casts and how smooth and round it is. I was going to try it on my crankbait rod because it supposed to cast a lot further than 8 strand braids. It's not cheap though and I wish it came in high vis yellow.

I have 20lb Sufix 832 on nearly all my baitcasters and have no issues with it. I've tried 30lb Daiwa j-braid x8 grand once and had no issue with that either.

If your fishing bottom contact baits around rock, 832 is definitely the way to go. J braid is a little smoother, and more supple, but not nearly as abrasion resistant IME, but it will serve you well as long as you're not dragging it through rock. No other braid I've tried stands up to rock like 832.

I just bought my first spool of 131. It is very smooth and quiet through the guides. It's long casting, but it's not a night and day difference over the smoother 8 strands or X9. At first I wasn't  impressed for the price, but it started settling in on the spool over the course of a couple hours and began casting further and got noticeably quieter. I've only fished it a couple nights on a chatterbait rod. We'll see how it goes over time. I'm not sure if I'll buy more or not.

I like it so far, but it's pricey and I've been happy with a couple cheap braids on my moving bait rods. They're, Angry Fish in 40# and SeaKnight W8 Manster in 30#. Both are smooth supple 8 strands that are very similar to J Braid, at a very good price. They both get mixed reviews on YT, but I've had zero issues with them. I threw an A rig on the 40# AF all spring, landed some nice musky, and pulled some tree tops up from he depths with it. It's plenty strong. I got both in low vis grey and they're holding their color well with no bleeding issues. Outstsanding stuff for the price.

Next braid I try will probably be that Duel X @bulldog1935 has been touting.

Yeah I don't mind low vis on a crankbait rod. Still wish they made high vis yellow.
