Brand new Zillion G drag screeching

Featured Replies

I fished my brand new Zillion G for the first time today. When I was fighting a fish, the drag literally made an awful screeching noise. I'm presuming this is not typical, considering I've read nothing but extremely high praise for this reel. Has anyone else had this problem, if so, is it easy to fix, or should I send it in for warranty repair?

Thanks,

Dave

Are you sure it wasn’t the audible clicking drag?   Personally, I like the feature.

UPDATE - It was NOT the clicking drag.  Still not sure what it was, but after hearing it again fighting a fish yesterday, it almost sounded a bit like how braid can kind of sing through recoil guides.  So I moved the reel from my NRX MBR842C to my Kistler Z-Bone, and all of a sudden, no noise!  Maybe it was the line through the guides, but I've never heard mono do that, and it's never happened with any other reel on that rod.

It's a new reel, so send it back for an exchange. No need to guess it or fix it yourself. Less headache, more time for fishing.

One thing I've always read about using Cal's drag grease - aside from removing almost everything you put on to keep the thinnest film - make sure the outside and inside edges of the drag washers get that film.  I can see a drag washer edge rubbing either the main shaft or main gear recess making some nasty sounds.

Here is my guess at the sound.... There is a spring located below the plastic clicker that is inserted into the drag washer. Some how the clicker has gotten out of place and the spring is making contact instead.

This is from a Steez CT.

This would be my guess as well. But still, if it's a new reel, it's less trouble to get an exchange than to get down to that tiny part and try to fix it.

Agreed.  I would exchange it if possible.

Taking the drag stack and main gear apart and putting them back together can be a pain but it is not impossible. I have learned to put a very small dab of grease on the spring and in the hole it goes in so the whole system stays in place while you reassemble it.  Those two parts for the clicking drag are really small .
