Surf setup for stripers

Featured Replies

Hey guys, just started gettinhr into stiper fishing, and after this past fall run im addicted. I have been using a 10ft ugly stik bigwater, but its just way too bulky for my liking. I have been recommended a penn carnage, but it seems a little pricy. I would be willing to spend it, but i wanted to know if anyone has any other recommendations? I will be fishing from beaches and bays using sp minnows, 6 inch shads, stuff of that natire. As well as poppers. Budget is tbd, but ultimately around 150. I will hear any suggestions tho.

right or wrong, i chose a Okuma Salmon rod.  9' long, and it is  two piece rod.  i can cast crazy far from a beach and with a 3000 Penn spinning reel, it has not given me any grief.

I’m taking it you are looking for a surf casting rod, I have a Cabela’s Offshore Angler 10’ that’s held up but fairly heavy. I also have one of the Big Waters, it’s like fishing with a piece of rebar.

Bought a St Croix Premier 7’ inshore, much nicer to use size when fishing off the rocks. St Croix has some surf rods, probably no cheaper then the Penn you looked at.

watch the rod weight for surf rods, heaving Slugo’s and big plugs gets old with a heavy rod and reel. I had to go with a trigger after a while.

Exactly the ugly stik is nice, its got backbone. Can whip baits out, but walking that popper was such a pain i ended up switching to the paddletail after a few casts. Yeah looking for a surf rod, and i want 2 pieces. I can probably spend up to 200, would you recommend the st croix or something else? And i ideally want something i will be content with for a while. I dont want to have to upgrade after this

Hey all,

i am currently looking for a new surf rod, but i also am in need of a reel. I havent look at prices much, and i dont want to think about it lol. Ideally less than 200 if possible with what im looking for. I want something waterproof, as a fisherman i notice i dunk my reel in the water too often, and i know this is terrible for the reel. I have a penn fierce 4000 series right now. It will probably be paired with some sort of a 10 foot surf rod, still to be determined. I will use it on the beach surf fishing, mainly for stripers,

If it was me I'd be checking out the bait shops in North Jersey and talking to those folks. They have a good handle on what is working up there in the surf or on the jetties. BTW when I was fishing North Jersey I used a different rod for the beach and the jetties.

Back in what now seems like another life,

I was seriously addicted to the striper fishing on the south jersey shore for over 15 years.

Spent more time chasing tides, rock hopping and had a head lamp pretty much glued to my nugget. Even worked part time in a tackle shop down there for several years.

Learned a lot.

I used casting gear mostly, however the gold standard and just about the only truly waterproof (and bullet proof) surf spinning reel out there, is the Van Staal line.

You'll pay for it though.

Good Luck and oh how I miss the smell of the salt air !

Been looking at the reels, definitely out of my price range. I am however considering a daiwa bg spinnjng reel, and the penn battle 2. For rods i still have to look more, same with the reels. I will probably get one thats just meant for saltwater bc i dont have enough to pay for the water sealed ones. Also, how do you make sure the reel does not go in the water while wading in the ocean? I found it very easy while out to set the pole down in the water, in turn submerging my reel.

You’re not gonna get a fully sealed reel for $200 but the closest are probably the Penn Spinfisher and the Tsunami SaltX

Diana bg, it's tough but Penn is fine also, I currently only own a Penn. P.S, went striper fishing for a week up in norcal last year, for line if you are fishing riprap and rock in water don't use braid, I regret!

Dang i can understand that. Im just mad because i had braid on my reel, and expensive braid at that, and when i went fishing last the pocket i was fishing had a lot of fish, so a lot of people funneled in. Someone with trebles snagged my line, frayed it very far up, and then because it was tangled asked ME to cut it off and retie. He was able to get back in the water while i had to reite, then i found the fray very high up in the line. In the meantime i just did a double uni, but it ticked me off.
and to answer someone elses question, i understand that a sealed reel is very expensive, just looked at the prices the other day. Ridiculous amount of money unfortunately. I will probably go with the saltx or penn as stated above. What is a good size/rating?

Ok I was also very confused about sealed vs not sealed and did a lot of research to make a educated desicion

Mag seal on Diawas are not worth it, it's a special magnetic oil that prevents debris from getting in, it's great but you cannot buy new magseal oil from diawa so if you clean your reels personally your normal oil will do nothing. And the reel will be worse than o rings/gaskets. O rings/gaskets are what you want, not as good as Magseal but cheap affordable and easy to replace. Diawa BG is a metal frame reel and won't warp against big fish, also has some light sealing and no magseal. Retails 120msrp..  if you are fishing near sand buy a cheap 40$ cdm sw reel, they hold up well and if you absolutely drop any reel in sand it will never ever be the same. Fw reels also work in salt if you don't want to invest a ton, use cheap ones because they will corrode from the salt, hose them off ocd good and take them apart after every trip if you really want them to last, or just buy a 40$ cdm and abuse and trash

3000-5000 is good, I use a 6000 but it's a little too heavy and big and would have been better for small  10-15lb tuna on charters.

Yeah that’s probably a good idea to buy cheap ones, i will probably just do that, i an clumsy and i know i will end up dropping it in the sand eventually
