gloomis 842c glx mbr vs 843c cbr imx pro?

Featured Replies

For those who have used these rods...which would you prefer for squarebills?  I will probably use the rod for other techniques (small jighead/megabass spark shad) but mainly this will be my squarebill rod.  Thanks

GLX MBR 842C might be my favorite rod.

Mind sharing why?  Have you tried the 843? What do you use the 842 for? Thanks

Primarily I use the 842 for lighter weighted soft plastics: Rage Menace, Structure Bug,

swim jigs, paddle tails and Jackhammer. Mine is saddled with a Conquest 100 and

#15 Tatsu. Casting distance is exceptional.

For me the GLX MBR 843C with 12# Sniper is one of my go to combos that I’ve been using for unweighted plastics almost exclusively lately.

For what the OP wants to use, I would go with the 843C IMX CBR. I have the 903C and use it for square bills and chatterbaits. Great rod. It is a little faster than some crankbait rods but

not as fast as the MBR series. With that said,  the 842 might be more versatile and better for small paddle tail swimbaits.

Yes I'm thinking the 842 might be a little too soft for squarebills.  I'm really trying to find the best squarebill rod gloomis makes. I know personal preference plays a key role but just trying to narrow it down.  Kind of surprised there's no cbr versions in the glx lineup.

For light and medium weight treble hooks I like the PR844C

I think the 843C CBR would be ideal for 3/8oz squarebills.

As to why Loomis doesn't have a GLX crankbait rod.... they use to and discontinued them. I owned one and didn't like it.  It was actually too sensitive and it didn't have a good arc to keep the fish pinned. I would loose fish with it and the constant heavy thump would drive me crazy. I ended up selling it.

Other rods to consider,  look at St. Croix Legend Tournament and at the Megabass P5. The P5's to me are very versatile. I have been very pleased with the ones I have.

The action of the 843C GLX is darn near perfect for small trebled hook hard baits.
But given the fact it is one of my most sensitive rods, I use it mostly for certain bottom contact plastic presentations which it excels at.

I rarely throw square bills, but when I do I use a Phenix M1.

I use my GLX 842c MBR rod for cranks a lot, primarily smaller baits though.

I'm talking Bandit 100, Bandit 200, my beloved Rebel Wee R, and  Fritt Side.

It's also a nice Pop-R, 1/4oz tube, and 1/4oz MiniMax Chatterbait rod.

It's not my favorite for jigs w/weed guards or t-tigs, it's a little too soft for me.

Ok thank you all!  I think I've decided I'm going to pick up the 843c cbr imx pro and then also pick up the 842c nrx down the road.  Seems like the 842 is just a rod that everyone loves.  I've seen a lot of great posts about it

The only CBR 843 I've had was the older GLX version.  I never really cared for it, and I always thought it was just way too loose. Maybe for 1.5's but for something like 2.5s or a BDS there's just not enough power IMHO.

Now the newer IMX version may be different but in general the 845cb is a more versatile rod.

I would call ALF and ask one of the guys there. They are the best for all things G Loomis and Shimano.

I'm a big Loomis fan but I really don't think the moving bait rods are all that special.

I've owned the 843 MBR in many versions going back to the Wiebe reel seats and it is just a classic all-purpose action as everyone has said. But it wouldn't be my first choice for 1.5's
