Unfortunately I've done this for years. I say unfortunately because even after all this time, it's not pleasant; it's only slightly more bearable than when I first started.

In all seriousness, I swear by it. It keeps inflammation down and just overall helps me feel better. The first 30 seconds is the toughest.

After that, hypothermia sets in and you lose whatever cognitive function you had. ?

I was listening to a former goalie who stressed how NHL trainers promoted the cold tub for this very reason.  Keeping the inflammation down reduces soft tissue injuries especially the groin and core injuries that goalies are prone to.

I have a hard time ice soaking a sore hand or ankle.  Full body would be difficult

If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you knew me. Here’s me in a former life:

You always hear about professional athletes soaking in ice.  A couple of years ago,  using an aluminum club to kill and keep a snakehead, the third stroke was to the back of my hand.  I pushed it into the cooler full of ice...

Hitting it with the club hurt less...

How long do they sit in the ice water? Is it dependent on the athlete's injury?

10 minutes on average.  It's not easy.  The first 20 to 30 seconds is pure misery.  I usually hit the sauna first then rotate immediately into cold therapy.   The combination speeds recovery helps with sleep and mental well being.

The older I get the more I devote time to making sure recovery, food and training are honed in.
