What casting setup(s) to add?

Featured Replies

Hey guys!

I'm a rather new bass fisherman. Been fishing on and off for fun in ponds since childhood but recently got a new to me boat and I'm out chasing bass now. I have 3 casting setups currently:

7:2:1 on a 7' Medium Heavy - Fast

7:5:1 on a 7' Medium Heavy - Fast

6:4:1 on a 7' Medium (basic Garcia rod from Walmart and doesn't state action)

I'm using the two MHs for all purpose single hooked baits for the most part and I'm trying to throw my treble hook baits on the Medium.

I am planning to add two more setups to my arsenal. I was thinking of a flipping stick with fast reel and  dedicated crankbait rod with a lower gear ratio reel.

My question is: Should I go with a MH cranking rod or M?

If you have any insight or suggestions on what two setups to add it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, is it worth it at this point to get the cranking rod? Would you definitely get a flipping setup to add? I'm open to any and all suggestions. Thanks!!!

I think the medium is a good idea for the treble hooked baits for now. I would say your next rod should be a heavy cover/frog stick. Something that could pull off both those techniques. A H/F should do the job. I use both the Mojo Bass and Bass X 7'4 H/F.

Uh oh. I found a deal on Shimano SLX 7'5 Heavy extra Fast BOGO. Since that's such a great deal will that work and I'll have 2 flipping setups? Sorry to inundate the threat

I'm in the market to add two setups. Is there another you'd definitely recommend? Also I found a BOGO on 7'5' H/EF Shimno SLXs. That's a great deal and for the savings would those work to give me 2 flipping setups and then get a 3rd setup with part of the money I'm saving? Thanks!

Take a look at this rod on sale at Midway. Only 2 left. Click the 'Rebate Available" icon highlighted in green.

I would go with a mh fast for deep diving baits. Dobyns Sierra are nice and have a soft tip with a good backbone. Put a Lew's Bb1 6 ratio on it for deep cranks. Next would be a flipping /frog rod Dobyns Sierra 7-5 magnum heavy with a Lew's Bb1 7 ratio. If you go higher you can retrieve your bait quickly but in a fight it's more strain to reel with a big gear.if you have more money I'd go with a Lew's custom Lite.

Very few anglers today flip, they pitch and you can do that with the MH rods you have.

If you want a longer rod for all round use Irod IRG754F Gen 3 is a very good frog rod and deep diving bigger crank bait, up to 2+ oz swimbaits, wake baits and flip etc.

If the crankbaits are shallow to medium diving or lipless a 7’3 or 4” Medium moderate crank bait rod works good.

The SLX is definitely worth it. Have not used them but I only hear great things about them. The rod’s specs looks like it can do the job well but are you sure you’re not confusing two of the models? There’s a 7’5 H/F which is rated 1/2 -1 1/2 and a 7’5 MH/XF which is rated 1/4-3/4. You should make sure it’s the 7’5 H/F if you’re looking for something different. And If it’s two for the price of one, you might as well grab two! Never heard of a deal like that for fishing rods.

I tried to get it but Midway doesn't accept paypal and thats the only way I can hide the purchase from my wife!!? That rod would be perfect. I could probably throw frogs into the really this stuff with that rod too!

You could also add a finesse rod. I know you were asking about a pitching rod or a cranker but the 2MH rods and the M rod has a lot of your basis covered. So if you add in a short M spinning rod or ML casting rod you cover even more.  If the bass don't want a senko or other trig plastics then I just either down size them or throw the same plastics on a drop shot

I have 2 spinning setups for the finesse stuff. Could definitely upgrade them though. That will be next after adding 2 more casting setups.
