Berkley Again

Featured Replies

I agree with Fishin Dad that the Berkley bait while similar in shape to the Magdraft has enough differences to make it a distinctive bait. I for one will be buying a couple of packs to see how they do . The Bass Mafia bait that has been mentioned in this thread is far more similar in my opinion .

If you take any Shad style crank bait don’t they pretty much all look similar? Spinner baits? Dare I say any kind of stick bait? How many of them are there? How do you not copy someone else but, offer this or that style of bait?

Do you have issues with the Magdraft Freestyle rolling on you? The rigged/harness version rolls on me if I'm not swimming it at the correct speed, but I don't think I've ever had issues with the Freestyle.

This is why the Daingerous bait is better imo. It doesn't roll at all and you can burn it. The subtle differences make a huge difference. The action is very different as well.

It is basically what the magdraft should have been if they listened to feedback. It is an improvement in every way.

There are at least 12 different Senko copies which was a replica of the sluggo.

How many of those match the fall rate, perfected the plastic to salt ratio, scaled up and down the size to match the same qualities, the softness, the texture, the tensile strength distribution.

The plastic polymer that needed additional chemical engineering to allow it to work with the salt to achieve that one of a kind 'shimmy'.

Bass experience the world far different than humans do.  Maybe the salt reminds the bass that its food since blood has salt content.  The movement, shape, fall rate all needs to work with a ton of hook, line and weight options.

Berkley reverse engineers very successful designs.  There is nothing wrong with that but there is a reason why a Senko is a senko and everything else is an imitation.

Matt Robertson used a cull shad a majority of the bassmaster classic to target big smallmouth. He was only catching 2-3 of them but they were big, could have won if he got limits

WTD top waters are spooks

soft jerk baits are flukes

worms are senkos

It’s fairly common to references them as these it’s almost a “style” rather then a brand.  Even though we all know it’s a brand it doesn’t have to be the specific one.

Magdraft, Cull Shad or Daingerous.. whatever catches your next PB, I love Megabass, especially they're unique baits but I just want to get what catch fishes.  I get the copycat sentiment from some, I don't mind that Berkley knocks off quality baits because I can walk into any tackle shop and find 90% of Berkley's line on the shelf. I can't say the same for MB or BM. Really looking forward to heavy drop shottting with the Gilly this spring.

The fishing industry is a HUGE business, as such copies are bound to be made because people are running out of ways to be innovative without taking ideas from baits already in existence. I personally don't care if one company copies almost to a "T" another companies design...especially in the case of Berkley which copies but cuts the price almost in HALF! Look, I like Megabass but there's no arguing that most of their baits are very expensive for what they are and if Berkley can make a very similar bait and only charge us anglers half the price of Megabass I'm all for it. Maybe eventually this will give other companies who make expensive baits a reason to second guess their price points and they'll reduce their prices too in order to level the playing field and all of us anglers will benefit!!!

I'll see your Cull Shad and raise you a Bass Mafia Daingerous Unrigged Swimbait. Zaldain obviously used to be with Megabass and totally ripped them off as soon as he left. The description is the best part. No shame at all.

Painstakingly designed and tested by Elite Series Angler Chris Zaldain.

And here's the Megabass Freestyle. I guess the Freestyle is looking down, while the Daingerous is looking more straight ahead. Very innovative, indeed.

I know this is 2 years old, but let’s talk about it. First I’ll say that I’m a huge megabass person. Of the 11 rods I have, 10 are megabass… mostly P5. I have a stupid amount of their baits too. So I’m not here to bash them in anyway. But Zaldain didn’t leave them and steal their idea. He quite literally helped design the magdraft. What he did was take the magdraft and make it better with his bait. The magdraft is notorious for rolling at any speed but d**n near dragging. The Daingerous swims 10x better than the magdraft. He also made the line through version too. Stage reality is, 90% of everything made today is a rip off of something and that will never change. But to say a guy that helped design the original, just stole the idea and made one with one tiny change, is ridiculous.
