MLF BPT Stage 2 - Douglas and Cherokee 2023

Well Keith Poche won it!

Lots of interesting weather out there for the guys.

Lots of 13-16lb a day limits leading.

I'm still really having to adjust for the 5 fish limit. I'm liking it so far!!

Really liking it because it's not just a mad dash race game on forward facing sonar to see who can catch the most.

Now you gotta get some bigs....

Wheeler got 8th, still was quite far up. Connell didn't seem to do so hot.

Water definitely still seemed low, I guess they haven't brought the lakes up yet for summer...

For summer? It was 19 degrees when they started the tournament

Poche fished the same spot all day at the extreme top end, took him 1 hour and 39 minutes to get there

HAHA or whenever their bring the water levels up in those lakes in TN.

Summer ain't tomorrow, but I guess we are into spring, I'm not from TN so I don't know how the lake levels go, etc.

Poche sure made a long haul to win by a pound, but I guess that's what it takes. Sounds like it's pretty hard to get to where Poche went, so he has a small light aluminum to get through some sketchy sections that a lot of other guys WON'T go. This will hopefully him him at most venues, but could be tough for others. They were saying he can't change boats throughout the season, he has to stick to one boat, and this is the boat he decided on for these kinds of reasons. I'm sure the decision already paid off!

Hahaha it’s quite complicated, each lake has a different timetable, all in the name of flood control. Here’s Cherokee, it’s a similar pattern for rise/fall with Douglas and Norris. Then a lake like nickajack or Wilson won’t have dramatic fluctuations seasonally but can daily

The guy parked next to us at the campground(Lake Wylie) was leaving this morning to go to Douglas.  He had a cool set up.  He had a slide in camper in his truck, and had his boat behind it.  He had been at Santee Cooper for several weeks.  He was going to Douglas, then Dale Hollow before going back to snow country.  (Minnesota)

Most of the lakes I fish are Duke Energy/Catawba river lakes.   Decades ago they would draw them down a bunch during Winter,  but now the keep them pretty steady.   They'll pull one down a little (10 feet or less) for hydro or dam maintenance but most of the time they're within a couple feet.

There was a pro who lived on lake Wylie I think they called hardware or something because of all his piercings? What’s his name and what happened to him? I always thought he was good fisherman

I know who you're talking about.  Don't remember his name, and haven't heard anything about him lately.   He lived, or lives 1/2 mile or so from my Sister in Law.

Bryan Thrift, 2023 Redcrest winner lives ~10 miles from me.  I don't know him, but have talked to him a few times.

Be cool to talk to Thrift and maybe have a barley pops and hear stories about fishing

Been super exciting watching Keith get recognized and shoot up.  He's going into the classic with some serious momentum.  Gonna be one to watch.

Quinn?

Yes Harley Quinn I mean Jason

I really enjoyed this tournament.  It was cool the way Poche won.  I don't care how many fish I would catch, you wouldn't catch me fishing where he was.  I don't like fishing in current and I couldn't control my boat in that.  That is the opposite of relaxing fishing.

You’d probably change your mind if you ever fished there!! Haha. Most people don’t fish right up in it like that. There’s some big striper, walleye, paddlefish up there too

Watching Poche’s YouTube, he got out and dragged his boat up over some rapids. Thought that was illegal?

Noticed they took the video down too.

I guess it’s not a rule, saw a guy in the classic get out and walk across a Marina dock to get his lure back

In BPT you’re allowed to get out of the boat to retrieve a lure with no penalty. 3 minute penalty if you get out of the boat otherwise. He may have taken his penalty once they got where they were going.
OR more likely, there’s a safety clause or something in the rules where you can get out of the boat to get It unstuck or around obstacles without penalty.

Either way, no disqualification or anything like that.

Did y’all see I think It was Todd Faircloth get on the Marina to retrieve his lure and his boat floated away. It’s a 3 minute penalty if the official has to help with the boat so he casted and caught his boat with jerkbait and pulled It back to him. He was using jb rod and 10lb line so he had to be careful and slow. Took at least 5 minutes to save himself a 3 minute penalty ?

It was cool though.

That’s hilarious

This whole "you can't get out of the boat thing" started years ago in a Kissimmee Bass Tournament.  A big cold cold front blew through during the tournament shutting down the fishing.  Two guys had previously used chain saws to clear a path to a tiny lake connected to the chain.  This enabled them to fish that lake where they caught a limit each day.  A ruckus started because some competitors claimed they had gotten out of the boat.  After much discussion they allowed the win to stand, but they clarified the rule.
