Featured Replies

Need a starting place for rods.. Reels and line.. Have been looking at ultralights like the falcon bucoo and the shimano sensilite.. Any help would be appreciated

Lots of medium light rods will do the job.  The one that I like best is a St. Croix Premier 6’6” medium light fast paired with a Shimano 1000 and 10/1 white Power Pro braided line.

Budget? Shore fishing or boat?

Shimano Sensilite. 6'-6"

Daiwa Revros LT1000

8lb high vis yellow braid, Power pro 4 carrier main line

6lb Berkley trilene XL leader

Uni - Uni leader knot

or just straight 4- 6lb mono...

My preferred setup!

Check out Richard Gene The Fishing Machine on YouTube.

His Crappie videos will get you straight.

Ultra Light rod or ML. you can find those at Academy, Dicks, Bass Pro.  Depending on how much money you have to spend you can buy a name brand nice one that should last for years or a cheaper one.  I love ABU Garcia ML white rods and Lew's rods are cheaper but very usable.  Reels, a Pflueger size 10 spinning reel makes a great crappie reel, any of Shimano entry level reels are good for panfish and you can get those at Walmart or Academy.  Think light, light line, lures, rod and reel.

I do not like the Shimano sensilite rods they are lame I gave one away to Good Will.  They are too stiff and heavy in the middle and the end is like a buggy whip, not good for fishing, you'll be worn out reeling in a brim.

Went down this rabbit hole a couple years ago. I have a couple of rods that I like. The TFO panfish rods have been fun to fish with. I have Pfleugger reels that I really like and have a Kastking ultralight reel of some sort that is good too. Keep it simple and you'll have a blast. I also have a ACC Crappie Sitx rod that is 8ft long that allows me to throw the little baits pretty far. You Tube has lots of great videos- Richard Gene is a wealth of info. Fish Anything and FloppinCrappie are good as well. There are also some very good forums dedicated to this type of fishing where you can glean some fantastic information.

I replied to the other thread requesting help for Crappie rods too and my response will be the same here.  If you're new to it, you're going to learn that there are tons of different techniques and that people prefer different types of rods for each of those techniques, so the responses that you're likely to receive will be from guys offering the rods/styles that they like for the style of fishing that they do, which may or may not be relevant to what you want to do.

What I do typically when fishing for Crappie is to cast 1/32-1/16 ounce jigs (1/24th the most frequently), sometimes in open water, sometimes near or on/in brushpiles, sometimes shooting under docks, etc..  The rod that I've been using which I really like is a 6.5' Denali Pryme UL/F rod.   I wanted a bit more length, so I also ordered the Denali Pryme 6'9" UL/MF rod, but didn't realize until after I received it that I had ordered MF and not a Fast action, which I definitely prefer (I prefer the fast action).   Even so, either one of those two rods have been productive and enjoyable for me, but again, I'm not sure whether you'll do the same sort of fishing that I do or not.

Crappie are fairly aggressive but agree, as a dedicated rod reel throwing little chartreuse jigs, light tackle is the way to go.

BUT I catch them on Spinnerbaits and even weightless senkos while bass fishing. Lol20210527_154643.thumb.jpg.6f17e03622058be1ffe8838858dc69ee.jpg

I'm probably not a big help. I only fish crappie during the spawn and use bobbers and jigs. So I use medium light rods. I'm not overly concerned with sensitivity and I use 6lb test. Just crank them in and get the bait back in the water. I do know a lot of guys use different techniques that require lighter equipment though.

I've really been getting into crappie fishing the last two years, and have spent a little over $1500 on specialized equipment for it.

From a couple of the the $130 13 fishing omen 36T graphite rods to the Lew's light spinning rods to pflueger Trion combos.

I'll be honest with you:  the $40 Crappie Max Pro rods at BPS are every bit as good.  I now own three, along with three pflueger trion combos.

Reels:

Pflueger president xt in size 20 with 8lb hercules no fade braid.

Pflueger Supreme size 30:  4lb test Mr crappie in camo color

Pflueger Trion size 20: same as the xt

Pflueger Trion size 25: BPS 2lb test clear Excel
