Couple questions

Hey y’all,

Do you tend to trust Navionics or the mapping that is on your fish finder more? I may find something on Navionics, think it is cool, go out to check it out on my fish finder mapping, and turns out it looks totally different there. I may not be able to find what I was looking for.

Additionally, an off-topic question, can somebody tell me how to delete the “trails” your boat leaves on the mapping on your sonar unit?

My fish finder is a Garmin Echomap UHD 73sv

The quality of a map depends on who created it,  how it was created,  and when.  The brand of map has little to do with it.   Most maps are created from the same sources.  Some are created from newer surveys.  I use Navionics,  LakeMaster and C-maps on my iPad.  I learn from all of them.  I use LakeMaster on the water.

So is that a separate chip you have?

Yes I have a LakeMaster chip for my Humminbird Solix units.  They can share one chip across the network.  I prefer LakeMaster for most of the lakes I fish because they are created from more recent surveys.  On other lakes they seem to be created from the same data as other brands.

So if at some point I were to get this Lake Master, would it work with my Garmin, and is it possible to move my waypoints over to the new chip?

Humminbird bought LakeMaster a while back and they do not sell chips for other brands.  You can use the On-Boat Network app on your phone to view LakeMaster maps.  It requires a subscription.  You can use the free trial period to see if LakeMaster maps offer any advantages for the lakes you fish.

Lgmouth, check and see if it is compatible on the Garmin website or call the customer service.  I believe that Garmin bought Navionics. Lake master may be proprietary to Hummingbird.

This is a link to Garmin's chip. Now whether Lake Master will work, I don't know.  Here's the link to Garmin's chip.

Read your Owners manual for directions to:delete trails.

Tom

Those trails are called active tracks and they  can get pretty cluttered after a while. With the screen on mapping press menu, one of the choises are waypoints and active tracks press that one, next one of the choises is delete active tracks that is the one that clears your screen.

Generally whatever mapping card you buy will be more accurate than the base map on your locator. Each of the big 3 have their own mapping companies now Humminbird owns Lakemaster, Lowrance owns C-map, and Garmin owns Navionics. With the exception of Lakemaster, you can go online to preview their maps and see the differences. I actually run multiple cards in my units. Generally I run a C map card or C map genesis map, but I also have a Navionics card as well. Some lakes have a clear winner on who's the most accurate and when that's the case I run with that map for the day.
