CH51Mg - Weird Noise

Featured Replies

Let me start by saying never again will I let anyone borrow my best gear. A friend of mine wanted to try out a Chronarch 50/51 Mg before buying one so I let him borrow mine. BIG MISTAKE!! First of all...the reel came back scratched. That doesn't bother me too much but the weird noise it's now making does. It's making a clicking sound when I reel in. Sounds like metal on metal! I can feel it transmitting into the handle. I asked my friend what happened and he told me that he slipped on some gravel and landed on his butt. The reel was dropped in the process.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

The good thing is he was upfront about it and is willing to help pay for any repairs. The reel is still under warranty. Will Shimano cover it?

Sorry to hear what happened Capn. I have learned that lesson myself, but not with my fishing gear. I don't let anyone borrow anything. I have found that your lucky if you get what you lend out, back. He's a good guy for being upfront, and offering to help with the repairs, it's only right. I have no clue what the anser to your question is. But if the reel is under warrantee, I don't see why they wouldn't cover it. Unless they have special restrictions against such accidents.

It's probably nothing serious, but I would dismantle the entire reel

to be sure that no sand particles got into the mechanism.

Sorry that had to happen, I know how you must feel.

Suuuuurrreeee ....... Your "friend" ;) slipped and fell on his butt. ;)

Really though ..... I am feeling for you big time.  Hopefully you can get this thing worked out.

Captain Cali,

Sounds like the return rachet plate is not clearing the return rachet arm. This can happen if the reel takes a really good hit on something hard. Probably the area were the scratch is.

Because you are located in the LA area you have 2 service centers you can take it to for warranty work....

I would send it to Shimano.

They are a GREAT company and will probably either fix it for free or replace it.

Thanks guys. I'll place a call to Shimano today. My buddy is being really cool about it. He knows how much I baby the reel and since he liked the reel so much he even offered to buy it if I wanted to sell it to him. We'll see...

KU...I believe he truely slipped. I know where he was fishing and it gets hairy. Smooth rock face with a bunch of small rocks/gravel and sand. I've taken a spill there myself a few times. I know what you're thinking dude!

There 's an old say: "you should never lend the woman, the pistol and the horse."

There 's another one: "never ask to borrow anything, crap happens and it will happen on what you have borrowed "

That's good your friend is being cool about it.  You know he probably feels like total crap about it too.

Good sayings to live by. From now on the only way I will let someone use my good stuff is if I'm there with 'em. At least then I can see what is happening.

I'm calling Shimano in about an hour. I wil keep you guys posted.

Can I ask a favor CC ? please ask them if the reel can be refinished, I don 't mean the coating, thanks to a guest 's kid on my boat mine got a scratch on the top, then the scartch peeled something like a varnish skin on the sideplate ( 2 mm by 5 mm ), it doesn 't show much but I hate knowing that the peel is there.

Obviously, this guy and his kid are never ever going to be invited in my boat again.

Raul,

You got it! I haven't called them yet, been busy. I'll try before the end of today. If not, first thing tomorrow morning.

I'm sending the reel to Shimano. Their U.S. corporate office is about 55 miles from me so I'm taking it myself to their reel repair counter. Probably on Monday.

Unfortunately, no, they can not refinish the reel. The guy on the phone didn't sound so sure though. I will ask again at the repair counter. I would like to know myself since my reel got scratched also.

  • Super User

Thanks ! let 's see what they have to say about it over the counter.

Captain Cali,

Well. What did Shimano say?? Do??

Inquiring minds want to know....

ReelMech,

They just told me to send the reel in. I'd rather take it in myself since it's just about an hour drive from me. I'm going to make the drive to Irvine on Monday. I will let you know what happens.
