Reel size question

Featured Replies

Hi all,

What size reel, 2500 or 3000, would pair best with an all purpose 6’6” M/F spinning rod (Daiwa Aird-X) for medium sized largemouth? Planning on using 20lb braid as a mainline.

Mainly looking at Daiwa and Pflueger reels.

Thanks in advance.

2500 is more than sufficient...I even use a 2500 on a MH/F rod.

If you go Pflueger - start at the Supreme...I wouldn't even bother with the President or President XT.

Also note that Pflueger sizes are not standard - for a 2500, you want a Pflueger 30 size...for a 3000, it's a 35 from Pflueger.

For a 6’6” a 2000/2500 is right. I prefer a smaller reel and might even put a 1500 size on it, but for an all purpose I would go 2000/2500.

I prefer bigger reels for line pickup in current.

Also a Pflueger is absolutely tiny. I used to use one for my trout combos and it's about the same size as Shimano 500 reels.

Sounds like you got a 20 (500 size) or 25 (1000 size)

I have a 25 that I use on one of my crappie rigs - a couple 30s that I use for bass.

I like size 2000 or 2500.

I honestly like the one with the largest spool diameter that still balances well. Sometimes a 3000 may not have a significantly larger frame, but may have a larger diameter spool.

In my experience, a larger spool typically has larger coils to the memory. (For mono that is). I realize you said you would likely be using braid, so not an issue in that case, but I still think a larger spool casts better.

In most cases I usually go with 2500 or 3000 with the 2500s on 6'6" or shorter and the 3000s on the longer rods hoping for better balance.
