Bluff Wall Bait for River Smallies?

Featured Replies

Found a pretty sweet spot on a local river that has steep bluff walls with a deep drop off. Picked a few fish off there with finesse jigs and tubes but wondering if there is some other bait I should be trying? (Not sure I am getting deep enough.)Water clarity varies from pretty clear to chocolate milk, depending on amount of rain and runoff. Have spinning gear and baitcasters on kayak when I fish this spot. Thanks!

Drop Shot

Was afraid someone would say that! Not my fav technique, but probably one I need to get better at. Thanks!

Where I live, I can catch smallmouth in a port situation where you have concrete walls that are straight down in 30 feet of water.  The water is clear enough so that you can see the smallmouth chase minnows up the wall.  I've tried a lot of things but the drop shot was the best.  I use a heavy weight  (1/2oz).  Most times the fish will grab the bait before it reaches bottom, so when you don't feel the weight, you thighen up and the fish is there.

Everything else swings of the wall like a pendulum.  The drop shot, I can place a foot or two from the bottom of the wall.

Flick shake is what I have the most luck with. Weight depends on depth but 1/16 to 3/16oz is what I normally use. Jackal flick shake 4.8" worms in Cola seem to work best but others work.

Got these in my tackle already so gonna try all of em, thanks!

What about a tail spinner? I used to have success with them around bridges and such maybe 20ft down.

Wacky rig with two 1/32 oz nail weights in each end to speed up the fall rate
