Finesse Football jigs

So, I experiment with the Owner 5313 and victory 10111 hooks (1/0 and 2/0) in the Do-it Aberdeen football jig mold.  This is showing promise.  The 3/4 oz one will probably need a 2/0 hook.  The victory 10111 has a taller eye so it helps on the heavier cavity.  I think these hooks will do what I was hoping for in this mold.

Not familiar with Victory hooks but it looks like they use the last 3 numbers of Gamakatsu hooks: 111, 114, 604 etc.

The Owner #5133 isn’t a jig hook, it’s a down shot hook.

I've had good success with the Victory hooks.

I just picked up the victory 10111 #2 and it definitely has a taller eye. I was hoping i could use it in my light wire walleye and mushroom head molds. Based on the length though i had to do some grinding to expand the eye cavity. It works in the smaller sizes but the hook eye juts out pretty far. Im always leary about that when it comes to snags but ive been thinking that actually might be a benefit around rocks and wood. It would be more of an issue with weeds. Im building the jigs for rivers though so that isn't a concern.

i hAd to do some serious mold modifications to the 1/8 oz mushroom head to get everything to fit in. Ofcoarse i am not using the recommended hook for these molds, they call for a lightwire hook. I am tying bucktail or skirt material though so i dont care what the collar looks like.

That’s an awfully big jig for such a small hook.  What are you trying to accomplish?

I am trying to make my own version of things like the Jewel PeeWee, Northland finesse football, and Beast Coast Openwater sniper.  That style of jig.  The PeeWee seems to have a really small hook on it.  The other ones I have no seen in person.  I want a compact skirted football jig, 1/4-1/2 oz weights and thinking a 1/0 hook.  I would like to use 2.75-3” trailer size lures on it.  Basically, a skirted jig with Ned style baits that will get down and drag bottom.

I’m doing the same thing.  Pee Wee uses a 2/0 hook instead of a #2.  It is very similar to the Mustad 32500BN sickle hook.  I’m making my version of bass whacker and hail Mary.   There’s are in the bottom row and mine are in the top row.

I figure with an assortment of 500BP little nasty, the 5313, the 10111, I should be able to make something work fine.  I saw someone (smalljaw) on YouTube used a Gama 4124 sickle (I had not seen that hook before).  I may need to go with a slightly heavier hook than the 500BP but want to stay on the thinner side of things if possible.  I did not know what size hook the Pee Wee actually used before I started ordering hooks to try.  Good to know that it is a 2/0.  I would have guess it was smaller.

I bought some jigs and used my dial calipers to get measurements and compared them to the measurements listed by Barlow’s.  The Mustad was the closest.  I’m guessing they have the hooks custom made.  I can’t find 7/16 and 5/16 molds so I am modifying 1/2 and 3/8 oz football jigs.

What are you using for weedguard?

I beleive the gami big river sickle is a heavier wire version sickle. I could be wrong though. Barlows gives wire diameters and 1x, 2x etc. they also show size comparisons. Based on what im seeing w/the #2 10111 the 2/0 may be about right. 🤷🏻

1 thing to remember the sizing varies by hook model. 1/o 2/o etc is not standard across brands or even models.

For weed guards, I plan on using the Do-it fiber guards.  0.018" for the FG30 size, figured they would be softer.  For the lighter weight, I ordered the FG-12.

I may try a wire guard instead if I do not like the fiber ones.  The first couple I made, I filled the cavity for the guard and will just do those open hook.

I am using 60# surflon in mine.  I mold them with 19 ga wire in them then pull it after the powder paint is cured and glue in the surflon.  It working fine.
