It really depends on what, where , and how you’re fishing. Lure weight range to load and cast the bait, power to land them in the cover. Action, faster for bottom contact, single hook, more moderate f

Do you fish heavy cover?  No sense having a flipping stick if you don’t fish heavy cover. Use what you fish and how you fish to guide you.    all that said, if you do fish around grass or wood

I agree with Boomstick on the Dobyn's Sierra line. The 735 C is the 7'3" extra heavy.  I'd lean more towards the 7' 704c or 7'3" 734c. Both of those are listed on TW as Heavy.      I really like

If you're looking to throw a crankbait, get the mod fast, absolutely. 735CB for deep divers or square bills in grass, 734CB to bomb cast square bills in open water and moderate divers.

If you're looking for two MH/F rods to essentially pull double duty, I'd go with one Kaden 714C and one Sierra 734C where one will be better for soft plastics and jigs and the other for moving single hook baits like spinnerbaits.

So since I already have the medium heavy moderate fast from 13 fishing which two do you think I should get?

The Falcon Low Rider is another excellent rod !

Maybe I will try one of those along with a dobyns.

In that case you might want the 734CB. It'll bomb cast square bills.

See, that’s what I was originally thinking and then also getting another one that’s a medium heavy fast, probably a sierra.

The other thing worth considering is a Sierra 703C, which is essentially a Medium/Fast for any other manufacturer. That is a super versatile rod (especially in the Sierra line) great for weightless or lightly weighted soft plastics, square bills especially in grass, light spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, poppers, spooks etc.

But it has more of a moderate than a normal fast action? I already have a travel rod that’s a medium fast, but only casts down to 1/4 so I may just need the 734 CB.

Yeah it's somewhere between moderate fast and fast.

Not using that website. Seems weird lol

@Brycecover @PhishLI I love Midway 😉  I purchased an “open box” Daiwa BG spinning reel from them which is freaking awesome btw and a pair of Danner work boots after that. Both items were perfect with quick shipping. I would definitely recommend them and I frequently check their site for great deals. Totally solid shop👍🏻

So do you think a kvd composite rod would be worth picking up for $65? I already got the dobyns kaden heavy fast. Now I need a medium for my smaller cranks.

Also been looking at this, https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Ark_Randall_Tharp_Honey_Badger_Series_Casting_Rods/descpage-ARKRT.html as well as the shimano intenza. I need a medium moderate fast ish for smaller moving baits and cranks. This one linked says it throws down to 1/8, but has a very wide range so not sure

TW has Okumas X Series for 200$ 46t blank with sic guides and super light, nothing else even comes close to that quality for the price.  Ark also has BOGO one their Vipers which are supposedly solid rods.

Yeah it would. I really like my M/M rod for throwing cranks in open water. It keeps them hooked and casts really far. You don't need the most sensitive rod for that either. so that might be fine.

Just hesitant because the kvd rods don’t have all that good feedback online and I’ve had a lews rod break out of no where when it was nearly brand new. Might keep looking. Maybe the shimano intenza

Mine is a Tatula 7’ glass Medium/Regular (basically moderate) for what it’s worth. Works very well for cranks

  • Author

Definitely not buying the kvd. Felt it in store and it was super thick for a rod I’m used to. Is that all glass rods tho?

  • Super User

Glass and composite rods are generally thick and somewhat heavy. The Tatula is a composite and isn't quite as thick as most, but is thicker than the graphite ones. I barely notice to be honest.

Which tatula is it?

7' Glass M/R

I say this every time glass is brought up.  Fiberglass is an inferior material for rod blanks unless extreme durablity is necessary.  Fiberglass is great for saltwater rigs where you're not casting all day and where a big fish could snatch your trolled lure and you need the resiliency of glass.  They are great for solit rod tips where you want extreme flex more than sensitivity.  For standard bass rods though, you can do everything with graphite that you can do with fiberglass just based on the layup of the graphite and you'll end up with a lighter and more responsive rod.

If you want something medium and moderate to moderate fast for lighter cranks down to a true 1/4 oz, then something like the Falcon Bucoo SR mansfield (cranker) is a great choice.  7', 1/4-1/2.  listed as moderate but i'd rate it closer to a moderate fast.  The lighter power means that it feels like it has more flex than moderate fast.  For crankbaits in the 1/4-3/8 region on a baitcaster it's a great rod.  I don't through down to 1/4 very often so I've stuck with the 5-power version of the same rod (the trapcaster) which is 1/4-3/4 MH/MF.  For 3/8-1/2 oz crankbaits that's a great rod.  You can throw a 1/4 oz bomber A with a good reel and light line, but the mansfield would be better.
