Figuring out hook sizes

Featured Replies

Is there any standardization for hook sizing? For instance, if I'm looking for a hook to fit something, and I don't have one already and I'm looking online. Is there any way to figure out the dimensions of a 3/0 vs 4/0 etc? More than once I've ordered a hook and it ended up being a lot different than I expected when I got it.

Spend some time at a brick and mortar tackle shop.

Print the download on 8.5x11 paper - 100% size. This is an accurate size chart for quite a few lure items - single hooks, trebles, split rings, etc.

If you really want to see hook sizing that varies wildly, take a look at fly fishing hooks.  My suggestion is to find a brand you like and stick with it for sizing consistency.

It's more like similarities than standardization. You may find one brand's sizes that correspond to another brand's,  but you can't count on it. Like @nso123 said, if you stick with only one brand, then you can count on the sizes remaining the same.

Unfortunately this is not true in all cases. For example, comparing two 5/0 hooks from Owner (flashy swimmer vs twistlock light)... they're both built around EWG style hooks with similar lengths (one is 2mm longer than the other), but flashy swimmer has significantly more gap (25.5 mm vs 20 mm). Makes sense considering that one is built for minnow style baits while the other is build for senkos, but it's something to keep in mind.

The issue is even more annoying with jigs and jig heads because a heavier weight takes up more real estate along the hook shank. Even within the same product line, the 1/8 oz version might be 5 mm longer than the 3/8 oz version. Doesn't sound like a lot but it becomes an issue if you're already pushing the limits of what your bait can accommodate.

Standard round and sproat bend hooks are fairly consistent to chart sizes. Extra Wide gap no standard exist.

Barlows has good data regarding sizes and wire diameter but it’s a crap shoot between Mfr’s.

I try to stick with Owner and Gamakatsu but surprised with the variations between bait specific hooks and thin wire vs heavy, screw lock vs EWG.......it does get confusing.
