Anchor PSA

Hey y’all,

Im willing to endure some embarrassment in the hopes that this helps someone out. If you purchase an anchor, and it comes with a nonlocking carabiner attached to the rope, DO NOT use the carabiner to put around the anchor. An unlocking carabiner is not a secure way to attach the anchor. You may lose it. Worst part is I should know better. Instead, use your knot of choice to attach the rope to the anchor. I like a bowline with safety.

Have fun

I feel your pain...

Old boat had a nice little anchor tied neatly to a 25 foot rope (that was not attached to the boat).

I dropped anchor over the side (in 30 foot of water), and watched as the unattached rope followed the anchor to the lake bottom  : \

HA!

Bummer. Sorry you lost your anchor, man. I had an interesting anchor situation the other day. Bought a new anchor rope over the winter and stashed it in the boat... and forgot about it.

I don't use my anchor much when fishing, but I had the kids out on the boat to swim the other day and pulled out the anchor and the new rope... only to realize I didn't have a carabiner of any sort anywhere in the boat and I couldn't fit the new anchor line through the hole in the anchor. This was a problem.

I scoured the boat and the only option I could come up with was some paracord. I tied my anchor to the eyelet on the end of the anchor rope with the paracord and very nervously dropped the anchor overboard. Much to my relief, when we finished swimming an hour later and I pulled on the rope, the anchor came up still attached! Sweet relief.

It’s still an anchor. It’s just not your anchor!

At least you didn’t jump in after it. Years back an older man fishing on Lake Erie for perch tossed the anchor in & realized it was not tied to the boat and jumped in to retrieve the rope. He drowned in the process. True story.
