Better hookset location for bass?

Featured Replies

Would it be in the corner or right through the top lip and schnoz? Way I do it particularly if I'm using bream for bait is to set my hook with about an 11 O'clock orientation if the fish is swimming to my right, and at a 2 O'clock orientation if it is swimming to my left. If it appears or feels to be swimming towards me, I'll give it a straight up tug to 12 O'clock. When I do 12 O clock it hooks them in the top center of the loop and schnoz, if I use the 11 O'clock or 2 O'clock hookset it hooks them more in the corners of the mouth, sometimes into the grizzly part or even into the gill plate. This really applies only for single hook sets, as treble hooks often get multiple hook points and sometimes both sides at the same time or the top of the mouth and a side. Just wonder which way is less likely for a fish to spot the hook?

If you are using bream for bait the best thing to do to increase the number of hook ups is use a circle hook.  No hook set at all required.  Resist the urge to pull back, let the bass run off with the bait, then slowly reel.   The hook will securely hook the bass in the in the corner of the mouth.  Not only will your bass landed to bite ratio go way up, but you will not gut hook any bass.  Circle hooks and live bait go together like jigs and pig.
