in the 1500 to 2500 size ? When my spinning reels are under a load, ie. dragging a tube along the bottom or reeling in 1/8oz jighead with 5" grub, the resistance seems high. I'm looking for a strong, effortless, and smooth retrieve. Recommendations ?

You have excellent advice here and all you really need. Beware though, soon there will be posts recommending Pflueger reels. These folks are known as mooks. They are really good guys but their taste in fishing reels is not what it should be.

Just a thought.  

Depending on the make of the reels you are having issues with, have you thought about cleaning and re-lubing the "Line Roller". Even on the reels you are seeking "strong, effortless, and smooth retrieve". You will have extra resistance when slow cranking (under-load) a spinning reel IF the line roller starts to bind "check for groves also".

Just a thought...

I guess I'm not familiar with what a 'mook' is.. I use a Pflueger reel and I am well pleased with it.. does that make me a mook???I suppose you are not a Pflueger fan???

If you are looking at the Stradic or Sustain, go ahead and SAVE some money in the long run and get the Stella.  Trust me on this one.
