Backing for braided line

Featured Replies

Does all braided line require some sort of backing? I talked to the rep at power pro and he recommended a small strip of compressable tape. Some say use monofilament for a backing. How about the other braided line what is the best way to prep before putting it on your reel or do you have to

I use backing for all of my lines.  Braid especially.  for braid its because of slipping.

The other main reason is I never use the other 1/2 of the line.  No reason to waste expensive line.

On reels with a perforated or 'whiffle' type spool, you are supposed to wrap it in tape first (i've used teflon and black electricians tape). As far as backing, when using braid I throw on about 50 yards of the equivalent mono line before the braid. 50lb braid gets 12lb mono, 40 gets 10, etc.

I just use black electrical tape. I hear you on the mono backing, but why risk losing a fish from having one extra knot fail? I suppose if you are fishing for bass only it's ok, since they wont really strip your line out - but here in CA where we fish for monster stripers as well as bass, it's always in the back of my mind.

I do the same, I re-spool very frequently in all my no-braid line, at the end of the year save me a bundle.

I use mono but will have to try the electric tape deal.

for most applications you need 100-120ft of power pro. So if you are starting with a new reel get that cheap mono of the same dia. from Wmart and fill to the right level. Even take it out and fish for a day or 2. Now strip off 35 pulls and put your Power pro on. Now your spool is filled to the right level to get max performance out of your reels.

Do the same with mono/flour.  reels then if you are stripping 4 reels open all bails or push buttons 35 pulls and you have them stripped and will fill the same back on.

I use 25 lb. Big Game as backing for 50 lb. P-Line braid.

What is compressible tape and where would I get some.  The powerpro rep also told me this works very well.
