baitcasters- how light of line can you go???

Featured Replies

I am from the great N.W. where we fish deep clear water- I would like to fish 6lb floro on one of my baitcasting setups. my 6'9" kistler magnesium ts with a scorpion 1001 mg.  I have spinning gear already so I know it is prefered.  I would like to give the baitcasting combo a try in not so deep water with a spider jig/grub with a 1/8 to 1/4 oz jig head.  What do you think? Is 6lb just to light for a baitcaster? I have baitcasting experience- just some thoughts...

The lightest i've ever went is 10 lb, any lighter and i prefer spinning.  But i'm no expert with a baitcaster, so you may have no trouble with it.

You can use #6 with your BC.  I have used Yo-zuri Hybrid Ultra soft # 6 with no problems.

Well, let me tell you a little something about Bud: He is an expert fisherman! His equipment is state of the art, too.

You may be able to fish 6 lb test line if you have the right baitcaster and right rod, but why? I like baitcasting equipment a lot, but I think spinning tackle is much more appropriate (for most people) when you are fishing lighter lines and making smaller presentations. BTW, all but a few of my biggest bass, both smallmouth and largemouth, have been caught on spinning tackle.

Main thing is to check to see if ur line can go behind the spool and frame if it can........... dont do it it will really mess things up!!! :'(

jetsprint2,

I am trying 6 lbs line this year as well on a Scorpion 1000 Mg/St. Croix Legend Tourney combo.

I use 10lb power pro and the diameter on that matches 4lb mono. I have also used 8lb power pro and that matches 2lb mono so I guess it doesn't matter what you use. Use what you like is what I say.

The only problems I see with light line, is that the angler doesn't have the right setup (rod/reel combo) to throw the light line/lure correctly, and has to keep backing off on cast control to get enough free spool. Doing this opens the gap in the spool race (area between spool edge and reel frame) and the line finds its way into the race and binds the reel.

I personally am with RW on this baitcasters are nice, but for small lines go with spinning.

Just my .02¢

Tight Lines All!!

eight pounds is the lightest I've gone and only a few times, eg. conditions and all of that. if you must go lighter then its spinning gear. i think.

Most of my BC have heavier line, but I do use a few with 10 and 8 pound line. My light weight set up is for erie SM fishing. I use a Team Daiwa Sol BC, with a 7 foot  Gander mountain med/light rod with 8lbs P-line flouroclear. I would normaly used spinning reels, and still do, but tried this set up last year and found I was loseing less fish

I have 1 of my casting rigs that I use 6 # yo-zuri ultra soft on. It's a custom rod (line wt. 6-12#) with a Shimano Scorpion mg. I use it to throw Charlie Brewer slider jigs. It works fine.
